Use SEOmatic from Slack: approve, undo and ask from a channel
Updated
What you can do from Slack#
- Approve or dismiss each change that waits for your yes, and whole campaigns.
- Read held work in full and apply it, or confirm you pasted a change yourself.
- Undo a live change, or revert one that measured worse.
- Pause, resume or stop a campaign.
- Turn your agents on or off, pick an approval mode, set the daily credit cap and run a new plan with
/seomatic agent. - Ask SEOmatic a question in a direct message, by mentioning
@seomatic, or with/seomatic ask.
Connecting a site, connecting Google and paying still open SEOmatic in your browser. Slack is included on every plan at no extra cost.
Connect Slack#
- In SEOmatic, open Settings and click the Integrations tab.
- Under Connect apps, find the Slack row and turn on its switch. Slack opens.
- Pick the channel your cards should go to, then click Allow.
- Back in SEOmatic, you see Slack connected. Decision cards will post to your channel. The Slack row now says which channel and Slack workspace it posts to.
- Click Send test card to check it works. The test card's buttons change nothing.
Only the account owner can connect Slack
Only the owner of your SEOmatic account sees the Integrations tab and the Slack settings. If you are an Admin, Member or Viewer, ask your owner to connect Slack. Once it is connected, you can use the cards and commands after you link your Slack account.
- Private channels: invite
@seomaticto the channel first, then pick it. - Shared channels with another company (Slack Connect) cannot get cards. Pick a channel inside your own Slack workspace.
Link your Slack account (everyone, once)#
A click in Slack must count as you, so each person links their Slack account the first time they click a button.
- Click any button on a card. If your account is not linked yet, you see a Link your Slack account button that only you can see.
- Click it. SEOmatic opens in your browser. Sign in if asked, then click Continue with Slack.
- When the page says Linked, go back to Slack and click the card's button again.
The link button works once and expires after 10 minutes. If it expired, click a card button again to get a new one.
Who can do what#
| Action in Slack | Who can do it |
|---|---|
| Approve or dismiss a change, pause or stop a campaign, undo a change | Members, Admins and the Owner. Viewers cannot. |
| Approve a change that can remove a page from Google (noindex, redirect, canonical, merging or removing pages) | Admins and the Owner, after a confirm step that says what happens and how to undo it |
| Connect Slack, change the channel and card settings | The Owner |
Decisions need an active plan
Approving from Slack works on any paid plan or a trial with a card. If your trial ended or a payment failed, Slack replies that decisions are paused and shows Open billing. Undo from Slack is paused too, but you can still undo any change in SEOmatic. See your payment failed.
Choose how cards arrive#
The owner sets these on the Slack row in Settings > Integrations:
- Cards: One card per decision (the default) or One digest per burst, which groups decisions that arrive together.
- Weekly outcome report: a Monday summary of what was verified. Off by default.
- Mention the site owner on urgent cards: only for regressions and held work, at most once every 6 hours. On by default.
- Channel per site: send each site's cards to its own channel. Click Test next to a site to check its channel.
Cards cover single changes, campaign plans, held work, changes for you to paste and changes that measured worse. Tasks inside a campaign do not get their own card: the campaign card covers them.
Slack commands#
| Type this | What you get |
|---|---|
/seomatic status | Your connection and how many decisions are waiting |
/seomatic pending | The top decisions, with their buttons |
/seomatic agent | Your agents per site: on or off, approval mode, plan now, daily credit cap, safety settings, undo everything |
/seomatic ask followed by your question | A private answer from SEO Copilot |
/seomatic indexing | Instant indexing for each site |
/seomatic settings | Slack settings (the owner) |
/seomatic help | The list of commands |
Answers to your questions are private to you unless the owner made that channel public. They use questions or credits the same way as SEO Copilot in the app.
Fix common Slack problems#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cards to your default channel are paused | The channel was archived or the app lost access to it. On the Slack row, choose a channel under Pick a new channel. Slack stays connected. |
| Disconnected followed by a reason | The app was removed or access was revoked. Click Reconnect on the Slack row. |
| Invite @seomatic to that private channel first. | In Slack, invite @seomatic to the channel, then pick it again. |
| This Slack account is already linked to another SEOmatic account. | Sign in to that other SEOmatic account, unlink it in Settings > Account, then link again. |
| Already decided by someone else, nothing to do. | A teammate acted on the card first. Nothing else is needed. |
Unlink your account or disconnect Slack#
- Unlink your Slack account: open Settings > Account, find Slack and click Unlink. Clicks from that Slack account no longer count as you.
- Disconnect Slack for everyone: the owner turns off the switch on the Slack row. Cards stop and SEOmatic deletes the stored Slack credentials.
- Does Slack cost extra?
- No. Slack is included on every plan. Approving from Slack needs an active paid plan or a trial with a card.
- Can I approve from email instead?
- Yes. See approve tasks from email or Slack.
- Will my agents change things without a card?
- Yes, unless you chose Approval mode. Changes that can be undone, such as titles, links, structured data, page text and new articles, go live on their own and get no approve card. The workspace owner gets a daily email listing them, each with an Undo link. In Approval mode every change waits for a yes. See approval modes.
