Use SEOmatic in Zed
Updated
Before you start
Zed and a free SEOmatic account. Zed's agent is free with your own model API key; Zed Pro is only for Zed-hosted models. Nothing extra: the connection signs in with OAuth.
Connect Zed#
- Add the context server. In Zed's settings.json, add a seomatic entry under context_servers with the URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, as in the snippet below. Or open Settings > AI > MCP Servers, click Add Server, then Add Remote Server, and enter the name seomatic and the URL.
- Sign in. If the seomatic row shows Authenticate, click it. Approve the SEOmatic sign-in Zed opens in your browser, creating a free account if you need one, and pick your site.
- Connect Search Console. If your workspace has no Search Console yet, SEOmatic returns a one-click connect link. No Google Cloud project is needed.
- Ask the agent. In the Write profile, try “Audit our live site with SEOmatic and list the issues this project causes.” The Ask profile has MCP servers off by default; turn seomatic on under that profile's tools if you want it there too.
Zed setup
// settings.json -> context_servers
// (or Settings > AI > MCP Servers > Add Server > Add Remote Server)
{
"seomatic": {
"url": "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp"
}
}Note
Setting an Authorization header here makes Zed skip the OAuth flow entirely. Use one or the other, never both. Zed asks you to confirm each tool call by default; a sign-in server configured here does not reach external agents such as Claude Code running inside Zed.
OAuth, an API Key Header or Skills?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Context server with OAuth | Most people, on a machine with a browser | "seomatic": { "url": "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp" } under context_servers, or Settings > AI > MCP Servers > Add Server > Add Remote Server. Click Authenticate if the server asks, and approve the sign-in Zed opens. |
| Context server with a key | Remote dev boxes where no browser can open | Same entry plus "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer smk_live_..." }. Zed then skips OAuth. |
| Skills | Repos where you want the same SEO playbooks every time | npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp --full-depth -a zed. Installs SEOmatic's 20 SEO skills: the CLI skill runs with SEOMATIC_API_KEY, the other 19 use SEOmatic's MCP server. All of them: SEO skills. |
Pick OAuth. No key sits in your settings file, the sign-in takes a minute, and you can revoke access from SEOmatic at any time.
Try Asking#
- “Audit our live site with SEOmatic and fix the issues in this project.”
- “How is the page I have open performing in Google Search?”
- “Which of our pages have the lowest CTR for their position?”
- “Is this URL indexed? If not, what is blocking it?”
- “Which queries sit just off page 1, and which file serves each one?”
- “Score this page and fix the top two issues.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Zed itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Zed's code edits stay under your review. Anything SEOmatic would change on a live site through a connected CMS is staged, never pushed. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation.
- Zed says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Zed, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Zed say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Zed. See disconnect an assistant.
