Use SEOmatic in Gemini
Updated
Before you start
Gemini web app: a personal Google account, age 18 or over, in the US, in English, with Keep Activity on. Gemini CLI: a Gemini Code Assist license, a Gemini API key or Vertex AI. Google stopped Gemini CLI for personal Google sign-ins (free, Google AI Pro and Ultra) on June 18, 2026; those accounts use Antigravity. Plus a free SEOmatic account.
Connect Gemini#
- Gemini web app: add a custom app. At gemini.google.com, open Settings, then Connected Apps. Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app and enter https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp.
- Gemini web app: approve access. Click Next, sign in to SEOmatic and approve access. In a chat, type @ and pick SEOmatic so Gemini uses it.
- Gemini CLI: install the extension. With Gemini Code Assist or a Gemini API key, run this in your shell (not inside gemini): gemini extensions install https://github.com/Minh42/seomatic-mcp
- Gemini CLI: sign in. Start gemini and ask a question about your site. Sign in or create a free SEOmatic account in the browser window that opens, then pick your site. If no window opens, run /mcp auth seomatic. When Gemini CLI asks before a SEOmatic tool runs, pick Always allow this server to skip the prompt next time.
- Ask your first question. Try “How did my site do on Google in the last 28 days?” and check the answer cites your real Search Console numbers.
Gemini setup
# Gemini web app (gemini.google.com, US personal accounts):
Settings -> Connected Apps -> Custom apps -> Add a custom app
URL: https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
Next -> sign in to SEOmatic and pick your site
# Gemini CLI (Gemini Code Assist or a Gemini API key), in your shell:
gemini extensions install https://github.com/Minh42/seomatic-mcp
# start gemini and ask a question; sign in when the browser opens
# (or run /mcp auth seomatic inside gemini)
# Gemini CLI, server only, no extension:
gemini mcp add --scope user --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
# over SSH or in a container, add a key instead of the browser flow:
# --header "Authorization: Bearer smk_live_..."
# Personal Google sign-in with no API key? Use Antigravity:
# seomatic.ai/ai-assistants/antigravityNote
Over SSH or in a container, the browser sign-in cannot complete. Create a key in SEOmatic under Settings, AI Agents, API Keys and add the server with gemini mcp add and the Bearer header instead. On a personal Google sign-in with no API key, Gemini CLI no longer answers: use Antigravity for a coding agent.
The Gemini App, Gemini CLI or Antigravity?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini web app | Chat at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini mobile app. Personal accounts in the US, 18 and over | Settings, Connected Apps, Custom apps, Add a custom app, URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, Next, sign in. |
| Gemini CLI extension | Gemini Code Assist and Gemini API key users in a terminal. Adds the SEOmatic skills with the server | gemini extensions install https://github.com/Minh42/seomatic-mcp in your shell, then start gemini and sign in. |
| gemini mcp add | A bare server connection in Gemini CLI, or servers and containers with an API key | gemini mcp add --scope user --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, plus --header "Authorization: Bearer smk_live_..." where there is no browser. |
| Antigravity | Personal Google accounts without an API key that want a coding agent: Google retired Gemini CLI sign-in for them on June 18, 2026 | See Antigravity SEO. |
Chatting at gemini.google.com? Use the custom app, and type @ to pick SEOmatic in a chat. In Gemini CLI with Gemini Code Assist or an API key? Pick the extension. It registers the same SEOmatic server and adds the SEO skills, so Gemini CLI knows the audit and striking-distance workflows. On a personal account and want a coding agent? Use Antigravity.
Try Asking#
- “Compare my Google clicks for the last 28 days with the 28 days before.”
- “Which of my pages are closest to page 1, and what would move them?”
- “Inspect these ten URLs and tell me which are not indexed and why.”
- “Audit my site and rank the fixes by impact.”
- “Is my business named in Google AI Overviews for my main services?”
- “Find the noindex or canonical problem in this repo that the audit flagged.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Gemini itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Gemini can read and analyze freely. Any change to a live page is staged in SEOmatic, never pushed by Gemini. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and in Approval mode nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. Code changes Gemini CLI proposes in your repo follow your own review: nothing is committed unless you accept it.
- Gemini says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Gemini, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Gemini say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Gemini. See disconnect an assistant.
