Use SEOmatic in Claude Code
Updated
Before you start
Claude Code and a free SEOmatic account. No API key and no Google Cloud project: the connection signs in through your browser.
Connect Claude Code#
- Add the server. In your terminal, run: claude mcp add --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
- Authenticate. Start Claude Code, type /mcp, select seomatic and choose Authenticate. Sign in or create a free SEOmatic account in the browser and pick your site.
- Connect Search Console. If your SEOmatic workspace has no Search Console yet, Claude Code gives you a one-click link the first time it needs your data.
- Run your first check. Ask “Audit my site with SEOmatic and rank the fixes by impact.”
Claude Code setup
claude mcp add --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp # then inside a session: /mcp -> seomatic -> Authenticate
Note
Running headless, in CI or in a container? The server also accepts a workspace API key as a Bearer token; create one in Settings, AI Agents, API Keys. Want the skills too? /plugin marketplace add Minh42/seomatic-mcp, then /plugin install seomatic@seomatic.
MCP Server, Plugin or Skills: How Should Claude Code Connect?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| MCP server | Most developers: the lightest setup, OAuth in the browser | claude mcp add --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, then /mcp, seomatic, Authenticate. |
| Plugin | Regular SEO work: the server plus 20 SEO skills (SEO audit, striking distance, weekly brief and more) | /plugin marketplace add Minh42/seomatic-mcp, then /plugin install seomatic@seomatic, then sign in through /mcp. |
| API key | CI, containers and headless runs with no browser | Add --header "Authorization: Bearer smk_live_..." to the claude mcp add command. Keys live in Settings, AI Agents. |
| Skills only | Teams that already run several agents from one skills folder | npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp --full-depth -a claude-code. Installs SEOmatic's 20 SEO skills: the CLI skill runs with SEOMATIC_API_KEY, the other 19 use SEOmatic's MCP server. All of them: SEO skills. |
Start with claude mcp add. It takes one line and a browser sign-in. If you end up running audits every week, install the plugin: same server, same sign-in, plus the skills that tell Claude Code how to run each SEO job well.
Try Asking#
- “Audit https://example.com with SEOmatic, then find the code responsible for each issue.”
- “Which pages have high impressions and low CTR? Open their title logic and suggest better titles.”
- “Check whether any page ships a noindex or a canonical pointing elsewhere, and fix it in the code.”
- “Inspect these URLs in Google's index and tell me why the excluded ones are excluded.”
- “Analyze the preview deploy at https://preview.example.com and compare it with production.”
- “We are relaunching next week. Run a technical check on the preview and list what would hurt rankings.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Claude Code itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Claude Code edits your code the way it always does, with your review. On the SEOmatic side, anything that would change your live site through a connected CMS is staged, never pushed. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation.
- Claude Code says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Claude Code, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Claude Code say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Claude Code. See disconnect an assistant.
