Use SEOmatic in Claude
Updated
Before you start
A Claude account on any plan: custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, Free allows one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner adds it under Organization settings. Plus a free SEOmatic account, which you can create during the connect step.
Connect Claude#
- Open Connectors. In Claude on the web or the desktop app, open Customize, then Connectors.
- Add SEOmatic. Pick SEOmatic from the connectors directory, or click + Add, choose Add custom connector, name it SEOmatic and use the URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp.
- Sign in and approve. Click Connect, sign in or create a free SEOmatic account, approve access on the SEOmatic consent screen and pick your site.
- Switch it on in a new chat. Start a new chat, click the + button at the lower left of the message box (or type /), hover Connectors and switch SEOmatic on for that conversation. This is the step people miss.
- Ask your first question. Try “How is my site doing on Google this month?” and check the answer cites your real Search Console numbers.
Claude setup
Customize -> Connectors -> + Add -> Add custom connector Name: SEOmatic URL: https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp Then click Add, Connect, and approve in the SEOmatic consent screen. In a chat: + (lower left) -> Connectors -> switch SEOmatic on.
Note
No Search Console yet? Claude will hand you a one-click link to connect it, and site audits and page analysis work without it.
Directory Connector, Custom Connector or Claude Code?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Directory connector | Most people, on claude.ai, the desktop app and mobile | Customize, Connectors, the + next to Connectors, search SEOmatic, Connect. |
| Custom connector | Team and Enterprise plans, where an Owner adds connectors, or when you want to paste the URL yourself | Customize, Connectors, + Add, Add custom connector, URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. On Team and Enterprise an Owner adds it under Organization settings, Connectors, and members then click Connect. |
| Claude Code | Developers who want the fix made in the code | claude mcp add --transport http seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. See Claude Code SEO. |
Pick the directory connector. It is the same SEOmatic server as the other two, and Claude keeps it signed in across web, desktop and mobile.
Try Asking#
- “How is my site doing on Google this month compared with last month?”
- “Which of my pages are closest to page 1, and what would move them?”
- “Why did my organic traffic drop last week, and what should I fix first?”
- “Audit my homepage and rank the fixes by impact.”
- “Which questions do AI assistants answer without mentioning my brand?”
- “Stage new titles for the pages with high impressions and low CTR.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Claude itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Claude can stage work in SEOmatic, never publish it on its own say-so. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. The first full rewrite of a page, and any page you mark as protected, only releases after you have seen the staged content itself.
- Claude says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Claude, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Claude say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Claude. See disconnect an assistant.
