Approval, Assisted and Auto: choose what your agents do on their own
Updated
What runs without you, mode by mode#
| Approval | Assisted (the default) and Auto | |
|---|---|---|
| Changes that can be undone, proposed on their own (the list below) | Wait for you | Go live on their own once our checks pass, with a receipt and one-click undo |
| Requests asking Google to look at a page, and sitemap submissions | Wait for you | Run on their own |
| Campaigns where every task is a change that can be undone | Wait for you | Run on their own, within your daily credit cap |
| Bulk campaigns (for example, new titles across many pages), article batches, landing pages, location pages | Wait for you | Wait for you |
| Redirects, hiding or removing pages, the page's "real address" tag, merges, robots changes, code and template changes, product data | Wait for you | Wait for you |
| Any type you ticked in Always ask first for… | Wait for you | Wait for you |
"Changes that can be undone" means these types: title and description rewrites, page-one pushes, social share previews, image descriptions, internal links (including a new sentence that carries a link), broken link repairs, structured data and repairs to it, heading structure, FAQ sections, tune-ups of articles SEOmatic wrote, page speed attributes, page text refreshes (updated passages, trust signals, a freshness date, citable passages, AI answer passages), fixes for two pages competing for one search, brand, local business and author data, and single new articles. The full list is in every type of fix.
Some of these cards carry the Bigger change badge, for example a page text refresh or a new article. They still go live on their own, because they can be undone. The badge only means the change is worth a careful read.
Before anything goes live on its own, it passes the same checks as work you approve: our quality reviewer, your protected pages, and a check that nobody edited the page meanwhile. Each day you get an email listing the changes your agents made on their own, each with an Undo link. See the daily email of changes.
Want to see every change first?
Choose Approval and click Save. Your agents still study your site every week and propose work, but nothing is written to your site until someone on your team approves that exact task. This is the only way to make page text refreshes and new articles wait for you: they are not in the Always ask first for… list.
Never picked a mode?
Then your workspace runs in Assisted, and Settings shows Assisted. Approval mode only applies when someone on your team picked it, during setup or in Settings.
Rules that apply in every mode#
- Your homepage, pricing and checkout pages, and any page on your Protected Pages list, are never changed by an automatic approval. The change is held for you. If you click Approve on such a task on the board yourself, that click counts as the go-ahead and the agent makes the change.
- Someone else edited the page? If the page changed while the agent was working, it stops and hands the change to you instead of overwriting it.
- Quality review. A quality reviewer checks what your agents write before it reaches your site, and holds back anything it cannot back up.
- Follow-up work. When a new article your agents wrote goes live, they add links to it from your related pages without asking again, in every mode. A bulk campaign you approved releases its later waves on its own after checking the first wave.
- Redirects, hiding a page from Google, the page's "real address" tag, merges and page removals need a workspace Admin or Owner to approve.
- Results that get worse. If a change marked Undo in one click measurably hurts the page's clicks, the agent puts the page back on its own. During a week when Google's rankings move across many sites, it asks you instead. For other changes, such as page text refreshes and new articles, the agent tells you and you decide. See live, measuring and verified.
Change your mode#
- In the sidebar, click Settings, then the AI Agents tab.
- In Agent Settings, under Autonomy, pick Approval, Assisted or Auto.
- Optional: under Always ask first for…, tick any type of fix you always want to approve yourself, whatever the mode. The list covers the small fixes, index requests and sitemap submissions. Page text refreshes and new articles are not in it: only Approval makes them wait.
- Click Save. Nothing changes until you save. Picking Approval and saving is what keeps every change waiting for you.

Only workspace Admins and Owners see these settings. During setup, the step How should your agents work? preselects Assisted. In Assisted mode with no website connected, your agents keep your first fix for you to decide, for up to 7 days. Today Auto does the same as Assisted; the only difference you see is a banner on the board when your agents reach the daily credit cap.
The board switch always turns on Auto
The Agents on / Agents off switch at the top of the AI Agents board has two positions, not three. Turning it on, including off and then on again, sets Auto, even if you had picked Approval or Assisted. Turning it off stops planning and everything your agents would run on their own, including campaign work in progress. A task you approve yourself still runs. To use Approval or Assisted, turn the agents on, then pick your mode in Settings and click Save.
The daily credit cap#
Daily credit cap (in the same Agent Settings section) limits how many credits your agents spend in one day. If you leave it empty, the cap is 10% of your plan's monthly credits, and never less than 50,000 credits a day. The settings page shows today's spend, for example Today: 12,400 of 50,000 credits used.
- When the cap is reached, work your agents would start on their own waits until the next day. In Auto mode the board shows a banner saying your agents paused for today.
- A campaign you approve gets its own credit budget (its estimate plus 25%), so the daily cap does not slow it down. It pauses with Budget spent when that budget runs out. See campaigns.
- When you approve a task by hand and the field is empty, the limit for that click is 50,000 credits a day, whatever your plan. If you see Daily agent credit cap reached, type a higher number in Daily credit cap and click Save. A number you set applies to every approval.
- The cap can be anything from 1 to 1,000,000 credits a day. There is always a cap.
Who can use Assisted and Auto#
Automatic approvals need a trial with a card on file or an active paid plan. If your plan lapses, nothing runs on its own. The Free plan cannot run agents. See pricing.
Undo is always there#
Every change your agents make on their own can be undone in one click: from the Undo link in the daily email, or from the Live on your site list on the board. A new article goes back to draft on WordPress, Shopify, Ghost, Webflow, BigCommerce, Contentful and Blogger. On other platforms, unpublish it in your platform. To roll back everything your agents ever changed, go to Settings > AI Agents > Undo everything and click Undo all agent changes. See approve, dismiss or undo a task.
- Which mode should I start with?
- Assisted suits most sites: changes you can undo go live quickly, you get a daily email with an undo link for each, and hard-to-undo work waits for you. If you want to see every change first, pick Approval and approve the first few yourself.
- The board offers "Let it run on its own". What does that do?
- After 5 or more changes with no undos and no rollbacks, the board may offer to switch you to Auto. Let it run on its own sets Auto. Keep approving every change hides the offer. If you are in Assisted, switching changes little today: Auto runs the same work.
- Does Approval mode slow my agents down?
- Only by the time it takes you to approve. At the top of the Needs you column, a line such as 0 changes going live on their own today, 4 wait for your yes sits above a button such as Approve 4, which approves all those small fixes in one click.
