Use SEOmatic in Grok Bot
Updated
Before you start
Grok Bot (from x.ai/bot; included with every paid individual Cursor plan, Cursor Teams, or a SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus or SuperGrok Heavy subscription linked to your Cursor account) and a free SEOmatic account. The Bot signs in with OAuth; if it only accepts a token, create an API key in Settings, AI Agents, API Keys and hand it over through the Bot's secure secret card.
Connect Grok Bot#
- Add the MCP server. In chat, ask the Bot to add a custom MCP server named SEOmatic at https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp (remote server, OAuth) and confirm the card it shows. Or select Connect apps in the sidebar (on mobile, tap your avatar), search SEOmatic and choose Add.
- Sign in. Click Authorize on the connect card, sign in or create a free SEOmatic account in the browser, and approve access for the workspace the Bot should work on.
- Check the tools loaded. Type @ in chat to attach SEOmatic, then ask the Bot “What tools do you have from SEOmatic?” and confirm the SEOmatic tools are listed. New tools are available from the next message.
- Run one job by hand. Ask “Which of my pages are closest to page 1?” and check the answer cites your real Search Console numbers and dates.
- Add the routines. Paste the template's INSTRUCTIONS.md into the Bot's instructions, then add the weekly review, the daily drop watch and the striking-distance sweep.
Grok Bot setup
# In chat, tell your Bot: # "Add a custom MCP server named SEOmatic at # https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp (remote server, OAuth)" # Confirm the card, then click Authorize and sign in to SEOmatic. # Type @ in chat to attach SEOmatic to a task. # Token-only? Ask the Bot to send "Authorization: Bearer <key>" # and hand it the key through the secure secret card, not in chat. # Later: composer + menu -> MCP Servers to check or remove it. # If SEOmatic shows in Connect apps (sidebar; on mobile, your avatar): # search SEOmatic, Add, then Authorize in your browser
Note
The Bot runs in the cloud, so it only reaches public HTTPS servers, which SEOmatic is. Adding several custom servers? Add SEOmatic first and confirm its tools load before you add the others: one stuck custom server can stop tool discovery for all of them. To remove a stuck one, open the composer's + menu, choose MCP Servers, open the server and delete its config. Full template: github.com/Minh42/seomatic-mcp/tree/main/grok-bot.
Custom MCP Server, Connect Apps or the Full Template?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Custom MCP server | Every Bot, today. OAuth sign-in, or a token | In chat, ask the Bot to add a custom MCP server named SEOmatic at https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp (remote, OAuth), confirm the card and click Authorize. Manage it later from the composer's + menu, MCP Servers. Token-only: ask the Bot to send an Authorization: Bearer header and give it the key through the secure secret card. |
| Connect apps | Bots where SEOmatic shows in Connect apps | Select Connect apps in the sidebar (on mobile, tap your avatar), search SEOmatic, choose Add, then Authorize in your browser. It shows under Installed, and you type @ in chat to attach it to a task. |
| Routine templates | Ready-made SEO bots: the all-round SEO Teammate, plus a weekly brief, drop watch, quick wins hunter, AI visibility, local SEO, agency reports, content planner and technical monitor | Pick one on Grok Bot templates for SEO and click Install: it opens in Grok Bot with its name, instructions, skills and routines. Templates never carry logins, so connect SEOmatic with one of the routes above. |
Start with the custom MCP server from chat, then add the template's routines. It works in every Bot today, and Connect apps, where SEOmatic appears there, reaches the same SEOmatic server. The routines are what turn the Bot from something you ask into something that checks for you.
Try Asking#
- “Which of my pages are closest to page 1?”
- “Compare last week's Search Console performance with the week before.”
- “Did any page lose more than a fifth of its clicks this week?”
- “Every morning this week, check whether my redirected URLs are indexed.”
- “Run an SEO audit of my site and rank the fixes by impact.”
- “Stage fixes for the two biggest problems you found.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Grok Bot itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
A Bot that runs on a schedule is exactly where approval matters most, so it never gets to skip it. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. The template's instructions also tell the Bot to report and stage, never to approve.
- Grok Bot says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Grok Bot, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Grok Bot say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Grok Bot. See disconnect an assistant.
