Use SEOmatic in OpenAI Dots
Updated
Before you start
A dot, which comes with ChatGPT Pro (Pro 100, 200 or 500, for users over 18, not yet in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland) or Business Premium. Enterprise admins can turn dots on for their workspace. Dots are rolling out gradually, so an eligible account may not see one yet. On Pro, custom MCP servers connect with read and fetch permissions only, so your dot reads and reports and you approve fixes in SEOmatic. A free SEOmatic account, created during the connect step.
Connect OpenAI Dots#
- Create your dot. In the ChatGPT desktop app, ChatGPT in a desktop browser, or the latest ChatGPT mobile app, create your dot and follow its onboarding.
- Connect SEOmatic in ChatGPT. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server with the Server URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp and OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. Open it under Personal in Plugins and select + to install it. Or install SEOmatic from ChatGPT's plugin directory. Sign in with your SEOmatic account and pick your site.
- Set your custom rules. On desktop or web, open Settings, Personalization, then Custom rules under Permissions (on iOS and Android: sidebar, Customize, Custom rules). Select Add, describe staging changes in SEOmatic, choose Ask before taking action, and select Add rule. Reading reports can be Take action without asking.
- Send the brief. Paste the brief above into a message to your dot, then ask it to list your SEOmatic workspaces and confirm the schedule.
- Check the schedule. Open Scheduled and confirm the Monday check is there, with the right time zone.
OpenAI dots setup
# 1. Connect SEOmatic in ChatGPT (your dot shares it)
# ChatGPT on the web: Plugins > + > Add custom MCP server
# Name: SEOmatic
# Server URL: https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
# Auth: OAuth
# Tick "I understand and want to continue" > Create as a plugin
# Plugins > Personal > SEOmatic > + to install, then sign in
# or, from the plugin directory: search SEOmatic, install, sign in
# 2. Custom rules for your dot (Settings > Personalization > Custom rules > Add)
# Read SEOmatic reports -> Take action without asking
# Stage a fix in SEOmatic -> Ask before taking action
# Approve a fix in SEOmatic -> never: you approve in SEOmatic
# 3. Message your dot:
You look after my site's search traffic through SEOmatic.
- First, list my SEOmatic workspaces and confirm which site is mine.
- Every Monday at 9am in my time zone, with no end date, run my SEOmatic weekly brief for the last 7 days and tell me only what changed: pages that gained or lost clicks, new indexing problems, AI answers that stopped naming my brand. Confirm the schedule you saved.
- Quote the exact date range and the numbers SEOmatic gives you. Never estimate.
- If a fix looks worth it, ask me before you stage it in SEOmatic.
- Never approve anything in SEOmatic yourself. I approve every change.Note
Using ChatGPT without a dot? The same plugin works in any chat: see ChatGPT SEO. In a Business Premium or Enterprise workspace, workspace permissions decide who can add a custom MCP server, so ask your admin or owner if you do not see Add custom MCP server. On Enterprise, an admin also turns dots on first.
How Should Your Dot Reach SEOmatic?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Custom MCP plugin | Business Premium and Enterprise; on Pro the plugin is read-only | In ChatGPT on the web: Plugins, the + button, Add custom MCP server, Server URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue, Create as a plugin, then install it from your personal plugins and sign in. Full steps on ChatGPT SEO. |
| Plugin directory | One-click connect, where SEOmatic shows in your ChatGPT directory | Or install SEOmatic from ChatGPT's plugin directory: open Plugins, search SEOmatic, connect and sign in. |
| Already connected in ChatGPT | People who already installed SEOmatic as a ChatGPT plugin | Nothing to add. Send your dot the brief and ask it to list your SEOmatic workspaces. A Codex CLI config does not count: your dot uses ChatGPT plugins. |
Install once in ChatGPT, then brief the dot. Your ChatGPT plugin permissions apply to your dot too, so there is one sign-in and no API key in any chat.
Try Asking#
- “Every Monday at 9am, send me my SEOmatic weekly brief. Only tell me what changed.”
- “Check my ten most-visited pages in Google's index every day and tell me if any drops out.”
- “We relaunch on Thursday. For two weeks after, check daily that old URLs redirect and new ones get indexed.”
- “Once a month, tell me which buyer questions AI answers give without naming my brand.”
- “When a page is one or two spots from page 1, tell me and suggest the fix. Ask before you stage it.”
- “Stop the daily index check and keep only the Monday brief.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. OpenAI dots itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
A dot works on its own between conversations, so the rules matter. We suggest three: - Reading reports: Take action without asking. Reading changes nothing. - Staging a fix in SEOmatic: Ask before taking action. You see what will change and why first. - Approving a fix: never the dot. Your brief says so, and SEOmatic tells every assistant never to approve on its own judgment. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and in Approval mode nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. A dot's own background research uses read-only tools, so it cannot stage anything during that research.
- OpenAI dots says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from OpenAI dots, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does OpenAI dots say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: OpenAI dots. See disconnect an assistant.
