Use SEOmatic in Hermes Agent
Updated
Before you start
Hermes Agent installed and set up, and a free SEOmatic account. For a server with no browser, create an API key in Settings, AI Agents, API Keys.
Connect Hermes Agent#
- Add the server. Run hermes mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp --auth oauth in your terminal.
- Sign in. Hermes opens your browser. Sign in to SEOmatic or create a free account, approve access and pick your site.
- Test the connection. Run hermes mcp test seomatic. It should list SEOmatic's tools without errors.
- Connect Search Console. If you have not yet, connect Google Search Console in the SEOmatic dashboard so Hermes can see your clicks and rankings.
- Ask your first question. Start Hermes and ask: “How is my site doing on Google this month?” Check that the answer names a date range and your real numbers.
Hermes Agent setup
# OAuth (opens your browser once)
hermes mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp --auth oauth
hermes mcp test seomatic
# Or in ~/.hermes/config.yaml (then restart Hermes or run /reload-mcp)
mcp_servers:
seomatic:
url: "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp"
auth: oauth
# No browser on this machine? Sign in with a code from another device
hermes mcp login seomatic --flow device
# Or use an API key instead of OAuth
mcp_servers:
seomatic:
url: "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp"
headers:
Authorization: "Bearer ${SEOMATIC_API_KEY}"Note
Hermes names the tools mcp__seomatic__
MCP with OAuth, MCP with an API Key, or the Skill?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| MCP server with OAuth | Most people, on a laptop or any machine with a browser | hermes mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp --auth oauth, or add seomatic: { url, auth: oauth } under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. No browser on that machine? hermes mcp login seomatic --flow device signs in with a code from another device. |
| MCP server with an API key | Headless servers and Docker setups where no browser can open | Add headers: { Authorization: "Bearer ${SEOMATIC_API_KEY}" } to the seomatic entry in config.yaml, and set SEOMATIC_API_KEY in the environment Hermes runs in. |
| SEOmatic skill | People who want Hermes to run SEO checks through a CLI in its terminal tool | npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp -a hermes-agent installs into ~/.hermes/skills. Set SEOMATIC_API_KEY, then check with hermes skills list. |
Pick MCP with OAuth. Hermes handles the sign-in itself, every SEOmatic tool shows up as mcp__seomatic__, and there is no key to store. Use the API-key line on a server with no browser.
Try Asking#
- “Compare my Google clicks this week with last week and tell me which pages moved most.”
- “Which AI assistants mention us for our main service, and who do they name instead?”
- “My organic traffic fell this month. Find the pages that lost the most clicks and tell me why.”
- “Check whether these five URLs are indexed and explain any that are not.”
- “Which queries get impressions but have no page that really answers them?”
- “Every Friday at 4 pm, send me a short Search Console recap. Ask before you stage anything.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Hermes Agent itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Hermes Agent can run on its own schedule and answer from chat apps, so SEOmatic draws a hard line: Hermes can stage changes, never approve them. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. If you share a Hermes channel with other people, they can ask questions, but approving a change still takes a signed-in SEOmatic user.
- Hermes Agent says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Hermes Agent, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Hermes Agent say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Hermes Agent. See disconnect an assistant.
