Use SEOmatic in ChatGPT
Updated
Before you start
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu for the full plugin, with write actions in the chat. On Pro, custom MCP servers connect with read and fetch permissions only, and OpenAI's help center says Pro users turn on Developer mode first, so Pro reads and reports and you approve fixes in SEOmatic. Free and Go cannot add custom MCP servers, and Plus is not listed in OpenAI's current help article. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, workspace permissions decide who can add a custom MCP server, so an admin or owner may need to add it or grant you the permission. Adding the server is done in ChatGPT on the web; once installed, plugins also work in the ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps. A free SEOmatic account, created during the connect step.
Connect ChatGPT#
- Open Plugins. In ChatGPT on the web (not the mobile app), open Plugins and select the + button, then Add custom MCP server. On Pro, turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT's settings first if you do not see it.
- Create the plugin. Name it SEOmatic. Under Connection, enter https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp as the Server URL. Choose OAuth for authentication, tick I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin and review the tools it found.
- Install it and sign in. Open the new plugin under Personal in Plugins and select + to install it. Sign in or create a free SEOmatic account, then approve access on the SEOmatic consent screen.
- Pick it in a new chat. Start a new chat, type @ and pick SEOmatic. You can also just ask about your site, but picking it with @ tells ChatGPT to use SEOmatic instead of guessing. This is the step people miss.
- Ask your first question. Try “Summarize my Search Console performance for the last 28 days.”
ChatGPT setup
Plugins -> + -> Add custom MCP server (ChatGPT on the web)
Name: SEOmatic
URL: https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
Auth: OAuth -> tick "I understand and want to continue" -> Create as a plugin
Plugins -> Personal -> SEOmatic -> + to install it
Then approve in the SEOmatic consent screen. In a new chat, type @ and pick SEOmatic.Note
On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, workspace permissions decide who can add a custom MCP server and publish it to the workspace. Don't see Add custom MCP server? Ask your admin or owner to add SEOmatic or grant you the permission.
Custom MCP Plugin, Plugin Directory, Codex or Dots?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Custom MCP plugin | ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu; Pro gets a read-only version in Developer mode | On the web: Plugins, the + button, Add custom MCP server. Name SEOmatic, Server URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. Install it from your personal plugins and sign in. |
| Plugin directory | One-click setup, where SEOmatic shows in your account's directory | Search SEOmatic in ChatGPT's plugin directory and connect. Not in your list? Add it as a custom MCP plugin instead. |
| Codex | Developers who want the fix made in the code | codex mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. See Codex SEO. |
| OpenAI dots | A weekly check-in that runs without you asking | Connect SEOmatic in ChatGPT, then give your dot one job. See OpenAI dots. |
Pick the custom MCP plugin. It takes about two minutes on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu, reads only on Pro, and it signs in with OAuth, so no key ever goes into a chat.
Try Asking#
- “Summarize my Google Search Console performance for the last 28 days.”
- “Which pages get lots of impressions but few clicks, and why?”
- “Are any of my pages competing for the same keyword?”
- “Is https://example.com/pricing indexed by Google? If not, why?”
- “What topics am I getting impressions for without a page that targets them?”
- “Stage a better title and description for my page with the worst CTR.”
- “Pick three blog topics I can realistically rank for, based on what I already get impressions for.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. ChatGPT itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
ChatGPT can stage work in SEOmatic, never publish it by itself. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and in Approval mode nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation.
- ChatGPT says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from ChatGPT, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does ChatGPT say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: ChatGPT. See disconnect an assistant.
