How to Use Claude for SEO
Most guides to Claude for SEO start with a prompt and a pasted export. That works for writing, but Claude is still guessing about your site: it cannot see your rankings, your clicks or which pages Google has indexed. Connecting SEOmatic closes that gap. A routine that works:
- Connect once. Add the SEOmatic connector (steps below) and connect Google Search Console, so answers come from your own numbers.
- Start from a starter workflow. SEOmatic offers five starter prompts, including seo-audit, striking-distance and traffic-drop. Open the + menu in the message box and pick one under SEOmatic. Each one runs a full tool flow on your site with no typing.
- Ask about one job at a time. “Which pages lost clicks this month?” gets a sharper answer than “improve my SEO”.
- Let Claude write with the data in front of it. Titles, descriptions and content briefs get better when Claude can see the queries and clicks behind a page.

How It Works, Step by Step
- You ask Claude a question about your site in plain language.
- Claude picks the SEOmatic tools it needs, for example Search Console performance and CTR outliers, and calls them on your connected workspace.
- SEOmatic returns your real data plus its own analysis, such as brand vs non-brand split or cannibalization, and Claude turns it into an answer.
- When the answer finds a fixable problem, Claude names the fix and offers to stage it. On a paid plan, saying yes stages it as a proposal in SEOmatic.
- You review the staged change and approve it in the chat. It goes live on your site through your connected CMS, and it can be rolled back.
SEOmatic's agents also keep working after the chat ends: on paid plans, diagnosis, planning and visibility scans run on schedule, so the next conversation starts from fresh findings.
How to Connect SEOmatic to Claude
SEOmatic is in Claude's connectors directory, so there is no API key to copy. Setup takes about a minute.
- Open Connectors. In Claude on the web or the desktop app, open Customize, then Connectors.
- Add SEOmatic. Select Discover, search SEOmatic and select Connect to Claude. Or click + Add, choose Add custom connector, name it SEOmatic and use the URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. If the form asks for an OAuth client, pick Use Claude's published identity.
- Sign in and approve. Sign in or create a free SEOmatic account, approve access on the SEOmatic consent screen and pick your site. Back in Claude, SEOmatic shows as Connected.
- Switch it on in a new chat. Start a new chat, click the + button at the lower left of the message box (or type /), hover Connectors and switch SEOmatic on for that conversation. This is the step people miss.
- Ask your first question. Try “How is my site doing on Google this month?” When Claude asks to use an SEOmatic tool, choose Allow once or Always allow. Check the answer cites your real Search Console numbers.

Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval
Claude can stage work in SEOmatic, never publish it on its own say-so. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and in Approval mode nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. The first full rewrite of a page, and any page you mark as protected, only releases after you have seen the staged content itself.

Yes, when they come from SEOmatic. Claude does not estimate them. Keyword volumes and backlink counts come from live market data on paid plans.

In Claude, SEOmatic is in the connectors directory. In ChatGPT, you add it under Plugins, +, Add custom MCP server, on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu for the full connector, or read-only on Pro.
How do I connect SEOmatic to Claude?
Open Customize, then Connectors in Claude. Select Discover, search SEOmatic and select Connect to Claude (or click + Add and add a custom connector with the URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp), then approve on the SEOmatic screen. Then, in a new chat, click the + button in the message box, hover Connectors and switch SEOmatic on.

Can it change my site without asking?
No. By default every change SEOmatic proposes waits for your approval before it touches your site, and your assistant is told never to approve on its own. Approved changes are stored with the page's previous state, so any edit to an existing page can be rolled back. If you later want low-risk fixes to go ahead on their own, you can turn that on in your autonomy settings; changes to your URLs or indexing, and new content, still wait for you.
I connected SEOmatic but Claude does not use it. Why?
Check three things. First, the connector has to be on for the conversation: click the + button at the lower left of the message box (or type /), hover Connectors and turn SEOmatic on. Second, if Customize, Connectors shows Reconnect next to SEOmatic, sign in again. Third, with 10 or more connectors on, Claude may load tools on demand, so name SEOmatic or your site in the question, like “Use SEOmatic to check my clicks this month.”
Does it work in Claude Desktop?
Yes. The setup is the same in the Claude desktop app and on the web: Customize, then Connectors.
Does it work in Claude Code?
Yes. If you sign in to Claude Code with the same Claude account, the SEOmatic connector you added here is already there.
