Use SEOmatic in Devin
Updated
Before you start
A Devin account and a free SEOmatic account. On Devin Enterprise, an admin has to enable Devin Local first. In Devin's config the key is url; the old serverUrl key only worked in the retired Cascade agent.
Connect Devin#
- Add SEOmatic to Devin's MCP config. Add a seomatic server with the url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp under mcpServers in ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json (every project) or .devin/mcp_config.json (one repo), as in the snippet below. Or run devin mcp add seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. In Devin on the web, open Customize > MCPs > Add custom MCP, choose HTTP, paste the URL, pick OAuth and save.
- Trigger the first use. Ask Devin something that uses SEOmatic, for example “Audit my site with SEOmatic.” On the web, click Connect on the SEOmatic entry instead.
- Sign in. Approve the SEOmatic sign-in when it appears, creating a free account if you need one, and pick your site. If a server shows Needs auth, click Authenticate; devin mcp login seomatic does the same from the CLI.
- Connect Search Console. If your workspace has no Search Console yet, SEOmatic returns a one-click connect link. No Google Cloud project is needed.
Devin setup
// ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json (or .devin/mcp_config.json in one repo)
{
"mcpServers": {
"seomatic": { "url": "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp" }
}
}
# or: devin mcp add seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
# Devin on the web: Customize > MCPs > Add custom MCP > HTTP > OAuth > Save > ConnectNote
Devin prompts for the sign-in the first time it uses the server, not when you save the config, so give it a SEOmatic task to finish the setup. Devin Local asks you before every MCP tool call. Older Devin Desktop builds kept MCP servers in the main config file; current builds migrate them to mcp_config.json on their own.
Desktop and CLI Config, Devin on the Web, Skills or the SEOmatic CLI?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop and CLI config | Most people, in Devin Desktop or Devin CLI | A seomatic server with "url": "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp" under mcpServers in ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json or .devin/mcp_config.json, or devin mcp add seomatic https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp. Devin prompts for the OAuth sign-in when it first uses the server; devin mcp login seomatic runs it by hand. |
| Devin on the web | Devin at app.devin.ai, shared with your organization | Customize > MCPs > Add custom MCP. Transport HTTP, Server URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp, auth method OAuth. Save, then click Connect to finish the sign-in. Needs the Manage MCP Servers permission; without it you get Suggest MCP Integration instead. |
| Skills | Repos where you want Devin to follow the same SEO playbook every run | npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp --full-depth -a devin. Adds SEOmatic's 20 SEO skills to .devin/skills: the CLI skill runs with SEOMATIC_API_KEY, the other 19 use SEOmatic's MCP server. All of them: SEO skills. |
| SEOmatic CLI | Headless runs where no browser can open | npx -y seomatic login --device signs in from any terminal, or set SEOMATIC_API_KEY. Then npx -y seomatic tools lists every tool. |
Pick the Desktop and CLI config. It is one entry, it signs in with OAuth so no key sits in a file, and Devin asks you before each SEOmatic tool call. Working in Devin on the web? Use Customize > MCPs; it is the same server and the same sign-in.
Try Asking#
- “Audit our live site with SEOmatic and fix every issue our code causes, one commit per issue.”
- “Rewrite the titles of our five pages with the lowest CTR, using their top queries from Search Console.”
- “Find out why these URLs are excluded from Google's index and fix the cause.”
- “Fix the broken internal links SEOmatic finds on the live site.”
- “We moved /es/ to /es-mx/. Which old URLs are still indexed, and which return a 404?”
- “Add missing meta descriptions to the pages we created this month.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. Devin itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
Devin's code changes go through your review. Anything SEOmatic would change on a live site through a connected CMS is staged, never pushed. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation.
- Devin says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from Devin, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does Devin say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: Devin. See disconnect an assistant.
