Use SEOmatic in OpenClaw
Updated
Before you start
A running OpenClaw gateway with Node.js available, and a free SEOmatic account with an API key from Settings, AI Agents, API Keys.
Connect OpenClaw#
- Install the skill. Run npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp -a openclaw on the gateway machine.
- Create an API key. Sign in to SEOmatic (a free account works), open Settings, then AI Agents, then API Keys, and create a key. It starts with smk_live_.
- Give OpenClaw the key. In ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json, set skills.entries.seomatic.apiKey to your key. OpenClaw passes it to the skill as SEOMATIC_API_KEY.
- Restart the gateway. Run openclaw gateway restart, then check that openclaw skills list --eligible shows seomatic.
- Connect Search Console. In the SEOmatic dashboard, connect Google Search Console with a normal Google sign-in. No service account is needed.
- Ask your first question. Message OpenClaw: “How is my site doing on Google this month?” The reply should name an exact date range and your real numbers.
OpenClaw setup
# 1. Install the SEOmatic skill on the gateway machine
npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp -a openclaw
# 2. ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json: give the skill your API key
{
"skills": {
"entries": {
"seomatic": { "apiKey": "smk_live_..." }
}
}
}
# 3. Restart and check
openclaw gateway restart
openclaw skills list --eligible
# Prefer the MCP server? Add this to openclaw.json instead:
{
"mcp": {
"servers": {
"seomatic": {
"url": "https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp",
"transport": "streamable-http",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer smk_live_..." }
}
}
}
}
# Or OAuth, no key stored (add and login need the gateway stopped)
openclaw gateway stop
openclaw mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp \
--transport streamable-http --auth oauth
openclaw mcp login seomatic # no browser here? add --code <code>
openclaw gateway start
openclaw mcp doctor seomatic --probeNote
Troubleshooting: if openclaw skills list --eligible does not show seomatic, the key is missing; check skills.entries.seomatic.apiKey and restart. For the MCP routes: openclaw mcp add and openclaw mcp login need the local gateway stopped, and a static Authorization header is ignored while auth is oauth, so use one or the other. Check a server with openclaw mcp doctor seomatic --probe. Keys stay in your config file, so never paste one into a chat.
Skill, MCP with an API Key, or MCP with OAuth?
| Route | Best for | How |
|---|---|---|
| SEOmatic skill | Most OpenClaw setups, on a laptop, a home server or a VPS | npx skills add Minh42/seomatic-mcp -a openclaw. Put your key under skills.entries.seomatic.apiKey in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. The skill runs the seomatic CLI. |
| MCP server with an API key | Gateways that already use other MCP servers and want SEOmatic's tools listed natively | Add mcp.servers.seomatic to ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json with the URL https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp and the header Authorization: "Bearer smk_live_...", then openclaw gateway restart. |
| MCP server with OAuth | No key to store, on a machine where a browser can reach the gateway | Stop the gateway, run openclaw mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp --transport streamable-http --auth oauth, then openclaw mcp login seomatic, and start the gateway again. No browser there? openclaw mcp login seomatic --code |
Pick the skill. It is one command, it works on a headless server, and it reaches the same SEOmatic workspace as the MCP routes. Use the API-key MCP route if you prefer every tool listed in OpenClaw's MCP panel, or the OAuth route if you would rather store no key.
Try Asking#
- “How did my site do on Google this week compared with last week?”
- “Check every morning whether Google still indexes my 10 most visited pages, and only message me if one drops out.”
- “Which keywords am I ranking 8 to 15 for, and which page ranks?”
- “Run an SEO audit of my site and send me the top five fixes.”
- “Does ChatGPT recommend us when someone asks for a plumber near me?”
- “Stage new titles for the pages with lots of impressions and few clicks, and send me the approval link.”
What It Costs#
Connecting is free. Reading your own data never uses credits: Search Console performance and insights, index status, rankings, site audits, AI citations, traffic and your tasks. Only live market lookups (keyword metrics, search results, backlinks), AI visibility scans and the fixes you approve use AI credits; every tool is labelled free or billed. On the Free plan, market lookups count against 5 free questions a month. The workspace Owner sees every credit spent, by feature, in Settings > Usage. OpenClaw itself is billed by its maker, not by SEOmatic: nothing on our side counts tokens.
Nothing Changes on Your Site Without Your Approval#
OpenClaw is always on and can act from a chat message, so the line is clear: it can stage work in SEOmatic, and only you can approve it. A staged change is a proposal: it says what will change and why, and nothing touches your site until you approve it. The assistant records your decision, and it is told never to approve anything on its own judgment. Approved fixes start within seconds, the page's previous state is stored, and any applied change can be rolled back. Changes that could take a page out of Google, like a noindex, need an extra explicit confirmation. Approval happens in SEOmatic, not in Telegram or WhatsApp, so a forwarded message or a prompt hidden in a web page cannot approve a change for you. Your API key can be revoked in SEOmatic at any time.
- OpenClaw says SEOmatic is connected but answers without my data.
- Start a new chat and check that SEOmatic is enabled for that conversation in the tools menu. This is the step most people miss.
- The SEOmatic page says "This connection request expired".
- Start the connection again from OpenClaw, or paste the setup prompt again.
- The Authorize page shows the wrong email or no workspace.
- Click Switch account on that page and sign in with the SEOmatic account that owns the site.
- Why does OpenClaw say it cannot change my site?
- Fixes need a live paid plan or trial. On the Free plan, or when billing is paused or failed, your assistant can read and answer only.
- How do I disconnect?
- Open Settings > AI Agents, scroll to API Keys and delete the row named OAuth: OpenClaw. See disconnect an assistant.
