What you can ask SEO Copilot, and what each answer costs
Updated
Ask your first question#
- In the sidebar, under Agents, click SEO Copilot.
- Type your question in the box at the bottom and press Enter. Shift+Enter starts a new line.
- Or click a starter question such as Where can I win fast? or What should I fix first?. It fills the box but does not send, so you can edit it first.
Type @ to point SEO Copilot at a source, such as your site, Search Console, Google Trends or one of your datasets. While it works, a status line shows what it is doing. Big questions can take a couple of minutes.
What you can ask#
- Your Google results: which searches and pages gain or lose clicks, quick wins close to page 1, pages competing with each other, whether Google indexed a page. Needs Search Console connected.
- Page and site checks: audit one page, score a draft, run a technical audit of your site.
- Keywords and competitors: search volume, difficulty, keyword ideas, who ranks for what, backlinks.
- AI search: how often ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews mention you, and which sources they cite.
- Your agents: what they did, what is waiting for you, what a task will change, why something is held. Needs your agents switched on.
- Your account: your plan, renewal date, and where your credits went.
- Writing: articles, titles and descriptions, page outlines, lists and datasets for pages at scale.
You can also attach images, PDFs, spreadsheets and text files: images up to 5 MB, other files up to 10 MB, 5 files per message.
What SEO Copilot does by itself, and what needs your click#
| You want to | What happens |
|---|---|
| See what is waiting for your approval | Ask, or click What needs my go?. It shows the waiting tasks as cards with Approve and dismiss buttons, right in the conversation. |
| Approve or dismiss a task | Click the button on the card, or tell it which task. It only approves when you ask. Changes that redirect pages or remove them from Google need an admin and an explicit yes. |
| Approve a campaign | It shows you the campaign and its cost first, and approves only after you say yes. |
| Pause or resume a campaign | Ask, and it does it. |
| Start new work (a fix, a campaign, articles, pages at scale) | It prepares the work as a task or campaign card. Unless you chose Approval mode, a fix that can be undone may then go live on its own, like any task your agents propose. Campaigns of new pages, article batches, redirects and removals wait for your yes. Articles you ask for publish once they pass our checks, unless you ask to read the drafts first. |
| Run an approved task now | Click Run on the task card. SEO Copilot cannot start it for you. |
| Undo a change that broke something | Tell it what went wrong. It shows an undo card. Click Undo this change. |
| Publish an article it wrote | Click Publish to your platform (or Open a pull request on GitHub). It usually lands as a draft and uses 1 page from your plan. |
| Edit your site directly | It never does. Every change goes through your agents, with approval and undo. |
| Be told when work finishes | It cannot message you later. Check the AI Agents board, or ask again: the task card in the conversation also updates on its own. |
These actions need your agents on
Approving, running and campaign actions only work when your agents are switched on, on a paid plan or trial. On Free, SEO Copilot answers questions only. Whether anything goes live without you depends on your approval mode, not on the chat.
What each answer costs#
| Your plan | How answers are counted |
|---|---|
| Paid plan or trial | No question limit. Each answer uses AI credits for the AI work of reading data and writing the answer. Keyword, competitor and backlink data, and AI visibility scans, add their own credits. Reading Search Console, crawling pages and site audits are free. |
| Free | Each message you send uses 1 question, however much work it takes. 5 a month. See the Free plan. |
- Under each answer, a line starting This answer used shows how many AI credits it cost.
- Settings > Billing Details > Where your credits went totals your answers under SEO Copilot questions.
- Long answers and answers that pull a lot of data cost more. Narrow questions cost less.
- A failed answer costs nothing. Credits are refunded, and on Free the question is given back.
When an answer stops part-way#
| What you see | Why | What to do | Charged? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The answer says it hit its analysis budget for this message | Each message has a spending limit, so one big question cannot burn through your credits. It answers with what it gathered so far. | Type continue. It picks the work back up. | Yes, for the work done. continue is a new message with its own cost. |
| The answer stops mid-sentence | Very long answers can run out of room. | Type continue, or ask for one part at a time. | Yes, for what was written. |
| I could not write the answer to this one... | The data came back, but writing the answer failed twice. | Send your question again. | No. |
| Sorry, an error occurred: followed by a reason and a reference | Something failed on our side or the connection dropped. | Try again. If it repeats, click Report a problem. | No. Credits are refunded. |
| After a reload: SEOmatic is still working on this - the answer will appear here. | The answer is still being written, or it failed. | Wait a few minutes. If nothing appears after 10 minutes, send the question again. | Only if an answer arrives. |
Stopping an answer does not save credits
Clicking the stop button only stops the answer showing in your browser. SEOmatic keeps writing it, saves it and charges for it. Reload the page to read it.
Good to know#
- Your conversations are private. Teammates in the same workspace do not see them. To show one, use Share: anyone with the link can read it without signing in. Stop sharing turns the link off.
- Download under an answer saves it as PDF, Word or Markdown.
- Delete in the conversation menu removes a conversation for good, with no confirmation.
- SEO Copilot answers in the language you write in.
- It reads the last 15 messages of a conversation. On paid plans it also keeps a summary of older messages and remembers facts about your site across conversations.
- You cannot choose which AI model answers.
- Messages can be up to 10,000 characters, and you can send up to 30 a minute.
- Why does it say it cannot fix things and asks me to upgrade?
- Making changes needs your agents, which need a paid plan or the trial. On Free it can explain the fix, not make it.
- Can I use SEO Copilot inside Claude or ChatGPT?
- Yes. See use SEOmatic inside Claude and ChatGPT. On Free, questions asked there count against the same 5.
- Where did a big credit charge come from?
- Open Where your credits went in Settings > Billing Details, and check the cost line under your recent answers. See how credits work.
