Connect your website so your agents can make changes
Updated
Why this step matters#
Google Search Console and your website do different jobs. Search Console is read-only: it tells your agents which pages and searches are gaining or losing clicks. Your website connection is what lets an agent rewrite a title, add structured data or publish an article once the work is approved.
Most people who stop after connecting Search Console think their agents are working. They are, but only on advice. Without a connection your agents propose at most 3 indexing requests, plus a technical audit when there is nothing to index or Search Console is not connected. Whatever the audit finds, you apply yourself.
Connecting changes nothing on its own
A connection lets your agents read your pages. They only write a change after it is approved, by you or by the approval mode you chose. See approval modes.
Connect your website#
- In the sidebar, under Setup, click Connections.
- If SEOmatic recognised your platform, a banner says We detected followed by its name. Click the button on the banner, for example Connect WordPress, to show only that platform. Otherwise type your platform in Search Platform.
- Click Add Connection on your platform's row.
- Follow the dialog. Most platforms take about two minutes: you sign in to your platform, or paste a key from its settings. Each platform has its own guide, linked below.
- When the card shows a green Active status, you are done. SEOmatic reads your site's content right away and your agents re-plan their work around it.
Pick your platform#
| Your site runs on | How it connects | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress or WooCommerce | Approve SEOmatic in your WordPress admin with one click | Connect WordPress |
| Shopify | Client ID and Client Secret from a Shopify Dev Dashboard app | Connect Shopify |
| Wix | Sign in to Wix and approve SEOmatic, or paste an API key | Connect Wix |
| Webflow | Sign in to Webflow, then pick a collection | Connect Webflow |
| Squarespace | Sign in to Squarespace, or paste an API key | Connect Squarespace |
| A custom-coded site (Next.js, Astro, Hugo, plain HTML) | Install the SEOmatic GitHub app on the repository your site deploys from | Connect GitHub |
| HubSpot, Ghost, BigCommerce, Framer, Blogger, Sanity, Contentful, Strapi, Drupal or Craft CMS | Sign in or paste a key, depending on the platform | Connect other platforms |
| GoDaddy Website Builder, Google Sites, Weebly, Jimdo, Duda or another builder not listed | These builders have no way for other tools to edit pages | Use copy and paste fixes |
Not sure what each platform allows? What your agents can change on each platform lists titles, page text, structured data, new articles and redirects side by side.
Someone else has the login#
If your developer or web agency holds the platform login, send them a one-time link. They can connect the site without a SEOmatic account and get no other access.
- Open the card that shows what SEOmatic can do on your site. It appears during setup, on your dashboard until your site is connected, and in Settings under AI Agents.
- Click Send it to your developer.
- Click Create the link, then Copy link, or type their email and click Email it.
The link works once and expires after 7 days. It supports WordPress, Shopify, Ghost, Wix, Webflow, HubSpot, Squarespace and Blogger.
Good to know#
- One website per workspace. Each workspace connects to exactly one platform. To work on a second site, add a second workspace. See add another website.
- Switching platforms. Click Disconnect on the current card, then connect the new platform. Only workspace Admins and Owners see Edit and Disconnect.
- Connect the right site. If the platform you connect is a different website from the one the workspace tracks (a staging copy, for example), the card shows a note starting Heads up: this CMS is a different website and your agents will not edit pages through it.
- Daily refresh. SEOmatic re-reads your content right after you connect, then once a day. Only changed pages are re-read.
- Connecting is free. Connecting, testing and disconnecting never use credits.
- Disconnecting never rolls anything back. Changes already on your site stay there. Proposed tasks that need the connection are cleared on the next planning run, and your history is kept.
- I connected Search Console. Do I still need this?
- Yes. Search Console only gives your agents data. Without a website connection they cannot change a single page.
- My agents are switched on. Why is nothing happening?
- Check the top of any dashboard page. If it says Your agent can't publish yet, your website is not connected. Click Connect CMS to start. More causes are in my agents are on but nothing is happening.
