How to connect Wix, and what agents can change there
Updated
Know this before you connect#
Wix does not let apps edit the text of your static pages
Pages like Home, About and your service pages are built in the Wix Editor, and Wix offers no way for other tools to change their text, headings or URL. On those pages your agents set the SEO title, meta description, canonical, noindex and structured data for you. Text and heading changes come as ready-to-paste text. Blog posts are fully edited for you.
Connect your Wix site#
- In the sidebar, under Setup, click Connections. On the Wix row, click Add Connection.
- Click Connect with Wix. Wix opens.
- Sign in to Wix as the site owner or a site admin. If you have several sites, choose the one this workspace works on.
- Approve the permissions Wix shows to add the SEOmatic app to your site.
- Wix sends you back to SEOmatic and a message says Wix connection established successfully. When the card shows a green Active status, you are done.
If you were signed out of SEOmatic when Wix sent you back, sign in and the setup continues. If you installed SEOmatic from the Wix App Market instead, sign up or log in when asked. With several workspaces, you pick the one for this site.
Not the site owner? Send the owner a one-time link from the card that shows what SEOmatic can do on your site. See connect your website.
Other way: an API key
Use this only if the app install does not work for you. Connect with Wix is simpler and gets every permission.
- In Wix, open your account's API keys page at manage.wix.com/account/api-keys and click Generate API Key.
- Name it SEOmatic. Give it Manage Blog, Manage Ricos Document, Manage Data Items, Manage Data Collections, Manage Products, Read Categories and Read Members, plus the SEO settings permission (needed for page SEO, redirects and robots.txt).
- Copy the key. Then open your site's dashboard: the Site ID is the long code in the address, after
manage.wix.com/dashboard/. - In SEOmatic, below or use an API key, fill in API Key, Site URL and Site ID, then click Connect.
What your agents can change on Wix#
| Where | Your agents change | You paste |
|---|---|---|
| Static pages (Home, About, services) | SEO title, meta description, canonical, noindex, structured data | Page text, headings, URL |
| Blog posts | Title, text, URL, SEO title, meta description, canonical | Noindex and structured data |
| Store products | Name, URL, SEO title, meta description, canonical | Product descriptions (on the older Wix catalog, descriptions are edited and image alt text is pasted) |
| Redirects | One click on Apply on my site | Multilingual sites: paste |
| robots.txt | One click on Apply on my site | |
| New articles | Published to your Wix Blog after you approve a content campaign |
- Unpublished edits are respected. If a page or post has changes you have not published in Wix, your agent holds its change rather than publish your work in progress.
- Some blog posts cannot be rewritten exactly. If Wix cannot convert a post to HTML and back without changing it, your agent leaves it alone and gives you the new text to paste, so an undo always restores your original.
- Pasting page text: in the Wix Editor, open the page, click the text, paste the new text over it and click Publish. Then click I've pasted it on the task.
Fix connection errors#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Only the site owner or a site admin can connect this Wix site. | Ask the owner to click Connect with Wix, or send them the one-time link. |
| Wix installation was cancelled or did not complete. | Click Connect with Wix again and approve on Wix. |
| This Wix installation link has expired... or This connection link has expired... | Start again from Add Connection. |
| This Wix connection was started by a different SEOmatic user. | Finish the setup with the same SEOmatic login that started it. |
| Invalid API Key... or Insufficient permissions... | Create a new key with the permissions listed above, or use Connect with Wix. |
| A redirect or robots.txt task says the connection needs the Manage SEO Settings permission | Your app was installed before that permission existed. In Connections, click Edit, then Connect with Wix, and approve the new permission. |
| The card shows an address like wix-instance-... | Wix did not share your site address, usually because the site is not published. Publish your site in Wix, then reconnect. |
- Will SEOmatic ever edit my Wix page text?
- Not while Wix offers no way for apps to do it. Your agents still write the new text for you, ready to paste.
- Can my agents write new blog posts on Wix?
- Yes. After you approve a content campaign, finished articles are published to your Wix Blog.
- How do I remove SEOmatic from Wix?
- Click Disconnect on the connection card, and remove the SEOmatic app from your site in Wix if you want. Changes already made stay on your site.
