Squarespace: what connects and what you paste yourself
Updated
What works on Squarespace#
| Where | Your agents change | You paste |
|---|---|---|
| Store products | Name, description, URL, SEO title, meta description, gallery image alt text | Canonical, noindex, structured data |
| Pages | Nothing | Every change |
| Blog posts | Nothing | Every change |
| New articles | Nothing | Your agent writes the article for you to add |
| Redirects | Nothing | Add the rule your agent writes in Squarespace's URL mappings |
This is a Squarespace limit, not a plan or setting you can change. If your site has no store, connecting adds little: your agents still find and write every fix either way. See copy and paste fixes.
Connect Squarespace#
- In the sidebar, under Setup, click Connections. On the Squarespace row, click Add Connection.
- Click Connect with Squarespace. It works on any Squarespace plan.
- Sign in to Squarespace as the site owner or an admin, and approve access to your products.
- You land back in SEOmatic with the message Squarespace connection established successfully. When the card shows a green Active status, you are done.
The card then shows a note: Squarespace has no content-editing API, so fixes are prepared for you to apply, with products as the exception. That is expected.
Other way: an API key (Squarespace Advanced plan only)
- In Squarespace, go to Settings, Advanced, Developer API Keys and click Generate Key.
- Name it SEOmatic, tick Products with read and write, and copy the key. Squarespace shows it only once.
- In SEOmatic, below or use an API key (Advanced plan), fill in Site URL and API Key, then click Connect.
Paste a change on a page or blog post#
- Open the task. It shows the new text with a button to copy it.
- For page text: in Squarespace, open Pages, open the page or post, click Edit, click the text block, paste the new text over the old and click Save.
- For an SEO title or meta description: open the page's settings, then SEO, and paste into the fields.
- Back in SEOmatic, click I've pasted it. SEOmatic checks your live page for up to 24 hours and starts measuring once it finds the change.
Fix connection errors#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Authorization was denied | You cancelled on Squarespace. Click Connect with Squarespace again. |
| Permission denied by Squarespace... | Your API key lacks Products read and write, or your plan does not allow API keys. Use Connect with Squarespace instead. |
| The Squarespace site linked to this API key has an expired subscription... | Renew the site in Squarespace. |
| Invalid API key... | Generate a new key and paste it. |
| User mismatch - please restart the connection | Start again while signed in to SEOmatic as the same person. |
| You clicked connect and landed on your dashboard with no message | Go back to Connections and try again from the Squarespace row. |
- Do I need the Squarespace Advanced plan?
- No. Connect with Squarespace works on any plan. Only the API key way needs the Squarespace Advanced plan (formerly Commerce Advanced).
- Can my agents publish blog posts to Squarespace?
- No. Squarespace offers no way for apps to create blog posts. Your agents write the article for you to add.
- Is SEOmatic worth it on Squarespace?
- Your agents still find what to fix, track your Google and AI search visibility, and write every change ready to paste. What they cannot do is put page and blog changes live for you. If you need that, WordPress, Shopify and Webflow allow it.
