How to connect Drupal, and what agents can change there
Updated
Before you start#
- Turn on the JSON:API module (part of Drupal core) and let it write: in Configuration, JSON:API, tick Accept all JSON:API create, read, update, and delete operations and save.
- Install the Simple OAuth module.
- For meta titles, descriptions, canonical and noindex, install the Metatag module. For one-click redirects, install the Redirect module.
Connect Drupal#
- In Drupal, go to Configuration, Simple OAuth, and create a Consumer. Pick a user who can create and edit content.
- Copy the consumer's Client ID and Secret.
- In SEOmatic, on the Drupal row, click Add Connection. Fill in Site URL, OAuth2 Client ID and OAuth2 Client Secret, then click Connect.
- In Choose where your posts go, click the content type for blog posts, match the fields in Map Blog Fields and click Confirm Mapping.
What your agents can change on Drupal#
| Change | What happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title, text and URL alias | Live | |
| Meta title, description, canonical, noindex | Live | With the Metatag module |
| Image alt text | Live | On the content's image field |
| New content | Live | In the content type you mapped |
| Redirects | One click | With the Redirect module. Without it, the task gives you the rule to add |
| Structured data | Paste |
Headless Drupal
If another website reads your Drupal content, that website must show the meta tags. Check with your developer before you rely on them.
Fix connection errors#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| JSON:API module not found. Ensure it is enabled on your Drupal site. | Turn on JSON:API in Extend. |
| Authentication succeeded but JSON:API access is denied. Check user permissions. | Give the consumer's user permission to create and edit content. |
| Every change fails after connecting | JSON:API is read-only. Tick Accept all JSON:API create, read, update, and delete operations. |
| Failed to connect to the Drupal site... | Check the Site URL. It must be reachable from the internet. |
- Do I need the Redirect module?
- No, but with it your agent applies redirects in one click. Without it, you add each rule yourself.
