How to connect Webflow
Updated
Before you start#
- You need to be an admin of the Webflow site, on a paid Webflow plan.
- For new articles, your site needs a CMS collection for blog posts, with a Rich Text field for the article body.
Option 1: sign in with Webflow (recommended)#
- In the sidebar, under Setup, click Connections. On the Webflow row, click Add Connection.
- Click Connect with Webflow. Webflow opens.
- Tick the site this workspace works on and approve.
- Back in SEOmatic, if you ticked several sites, the Choose your Webflow site box opens. Pick one under Select site and click Connect within 15 minutes.
- When the card shows a green Active status, the site is connected.
One more step for new articles
After signing in with Webflow, SEOmatic does not ask which collection to publish to. Until you choose one, articles your agents write stay ready and are not published. To choose it, use option 2 below instead, or ask SEO Copilot to write an article, click Publish to Webflow under it and pick your collection. That also publishes the article.
Option 2: paste a site API token#
- In Webflow, open your site's Site settings, then Apps & integrations, then API access, and click Generate API token.
- Name it SEOmatic. Set CMS, Pages and Sites to read and write, and Authorized user to read-only. Click Generate token and copy it. Webflow shows it only once.
- In SEOmatic, open the Webflow dialog and paste it under or use an API token in API Token.
- Choose your site in Select site and your public domain in Select domain. A site with no custom domain offers its webflow.io address.
- Click Connect.
Give Pages read and write
The help box in SEOmatic says Pages read-only. With read-only, your agents cannot set SEO titles on your static pages. Choose read and write.
Choose where your posts go
After a token connect, the Choose where your posts go box opens on its own. You cannot skip it.
- Click the collection that holds your blog posts.
- In Map Blog Fields, match each SEOmatic field to a Webflow field. Title, Content, Slug, Excerpt and Featured Image are required. Content must be a Rich Text field and Featured Image an Image field.
- Map Meta Title and Meta Description if your collection has fields for them. This also lets your agents edit SEO titles on your existing posts.
- Click Confirm Mapping. A message says Blog publishing configured.
What your agents can change on Webflow#
| Where | Your agents change | You do it yourself |
|---|---|---|
| CMS collection items (blog posts and similar) | Name, URL slug, body, and SEO title and meta description when those fields are mapped | Canonical, noindex, structured data |
| Static pages (Home, About, Pricing) | SEO title and meta description, saved in Webflow | Publish your site in Webflow to make them live. Page text, name and URL: paste |
| New articles | Published live into your chosen collection | |
| Redirects | Add them in Webflow's site settings |
SEOmatic never publishes your whole Webflow site, so it never pushes your own unfinished design work live. That is why static page SEO waits for you: the task shows the change is saved, and it goes live the next time you click Publish in Webflow.
Fix connection errors#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Invalid API token... | Generate a new token and paste it again. |
| Your API token is valid but lacks CMS permissions... or Access denied... | Generate a new token with CMS read and write. |
| Selected site not found or not accessible with this API token | Site tokens work for one site. Generate the token in that site's settings. |
| Webflow granted access but no sites were found... | Start again and tick your site on Webflow's approval screen. |
| Authorization was denied... | You cancelled on Webflow. Click Connect with Webflow again. |
| Webflow authorization expired. Please connect again. | You took more than 15 minutes to pick a site. Start again. |
| Your role in this workspace cannot connect a CMS... | Ask a workspace Admin or Owner, or ask them to make you a Member. |
| Reconnect to edit static pages in the Edit box | Your Webflow approval is older than the static pages feature. Click Reconnect with Webflow, then choose your collection again. |
Reconnecting clears your collection choice
Any Update or Reconnect with Webflow replaces the connection, and your chosen collection is cleared without a message. After reconnecting, choose it again as described in option 1.
- Does SEOmatic publish my whole Webflow site?
- No. It publishes only the collection items it changes. Static page SEO goes live when you publish.
- I have several Webflow sites. Can one workspace use them all?
- No. One workspace connects to one site. Add a workspace for each other site. See add another website.
- Can my agents add structured data on Webflow?
- Not automatically. Webflow changes the code inside embeds, so it would not work. Your agent gives you the code to paste in the page's custom code settings.
