How to connect Framer, and what agents can change there
Updated
Before you start#
You need Editor or Owner access to the Framer project.
Connect Framer#
- In your Framer project, open Site Settings, then General, scroll to API Keys, and create a key.
- Copy your Project URL from the browser address bar while the Framer editor is open. It looks like
https://framer.com/projects/.... - In SEOmatic, on the Framer row, click Add Connection. Fill in Project URL, Site URL (your public address) and API Key, then click Connect.
What your agents can change on Framer#
| Change | What happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CMS collection items: title and URL | Live | |
| CMS collection items: SEO fields | Live | When you mapped them at connect |
| Redirects | One click | Click Apply on my site. SEOmatic adds the redirect, then publishes your site |
| Pages designed on the canvas | Paste | Framer has no API for canvas pages |
| Page text | Paste | |
| Structured data | Paste | |
| New articles | Paste |
Framer publishes the whole site at once#
Framer cannot publish one page on its own: every publish sends the whole site live. Before each change, SEOmatic checks for anyone's unpublished work. If it finds some, it holds the change and tells you, so your drafts never go live by accident. Publish or discard them in Framer, then try again.
If your project uses a staging site, changes publish to staging.
Fix connection errors#
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Invalid Framer project URL... | Copy the address from the Framer editor. It starts with https://framer.com/projects/. |
| Invalid API Key. Please check your Framer API Key in Project Settings. | Create a new key in Site Settings, General, API Keys and paste it. |
| Project not found. Please check your Framer Project URL. | The key and the project do not match. Use a key created in the same project. |
| A change is held because of unpublished work | Publish or discard the pending changes in Framer, then retry the task. |
- Why does my agent not edit my home page on Framer?
- Pages designed on the canvas cannot be changed by outside tools. Your agent writes the new text for you, ready to paste.
- Will a redirect publish my unfinished design work?
- No. SEOmatic checks for unpublished work first and holds the redirect if it finds any.
