The SEOmatic AI WordPress Plugin: Install, Modules, Approvals and Privacy
Updated
Install It#
In review for the WordPress plugin directory
SEOmatic AI is in review for the WordPress plugin directory, so it is not under Plugins, Add New yet. Meanwhile, download it from the SEOmatic AI page; that page links to the listing once it is live. After the listing, SEOmatic adds it to a connected WordPress site by itself when your connection is an Administrator.
- Download the zip from the SEOmatic AI page. In WordPress, go to Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin, choose the zip, then click Install Now and Activate.
- Open SEOmatic in the admin menu. The free modules already work.
- If you used one of the older standalone SEOmatic plugins, such as SEOmatic Redirects or SEO Writer, deactivate it. Its settings and data carry over. Until you do, Home names it and keeps that module paused.
It needs WordPress 5.7 or later and PHP 7.4 or later. It works next to Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress, and never asks you to switch.
The Modules#
Each module has its own screen under SEOmatic. Switch any of them off on Home. A module that is off adds no code to your pages.
| Module | What it does | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Redirects and 404s | 301, 302, 307 and 410 rules, and a log of the missing pages visitors and crawlers hit. Steps aside if Redirection or another redirect plugin is active | Nothing |
| AI crawlers | Which AI crawlers read which pages, and whether robots.txt blocks AI search. An optional llms.txt with a discovery link on your home page | Nothing |
| Instant indexing | Tells Bing, Yandex, Naver and Seznam through IndexNow when you publish or update. Off until you switch it on | Nothing |
| SEO audit | Checks every post and page for missing titles, descriptions, headings and more | Nothing |
| Internal links | Finds older posts that should link to a newer one, and adds the link in one click | Nothing |
| Business facts | Adds your business facts to the structured data your SEO plugin prints, or prints its own when there is none | Nothing |
| AI shopping | Which AI assistants read your products, what each product is missing, and an optional AI shopping feed | WooCommerce |
| Losing traffic and AI-cited pages | Posts losing Google traffic, and the posts AI engines fetch and send visits to | A free SEOmatic account |
| Agent changes | Lets your agents write SEO titles, descriptions, social previews, canonicals, schema and page builder text into your SEO plugin's fields | A paid plan or trial |
| Page templates | Comparison and integration page templates built on Advanced Custom Fields, for page sets | A paid plan or trial |
With a free account, the AI crawlers screen also shows an AI answers card from your latest AI visibility scan: which assistants mention your site, the answers gained and lost since the previous scan, and the competitors named instead of you. Reading it never starts a scan or spends credits.
Connect It to SEOmatic#
- On SEOmatic, Home, click Connect.
- Sign in to SEOmatic, or create a free account. The plugin gets its key by itself, so there is nothing to copy.
- Click Allow publishing and approve SEOmatic on the WordPress screen that opens. This creates an Application Password, which is what lets approved fixes be published. You can revoke it any time under Users, Profile.
- Choose your Search Console site.
Home then shows a checklist: Search Console linked, Publishing allowed and Agents on. Anything not done has one button that finishes it. The steps are the same as in connect WordPress.
Approve Fixes From Wp-Admin#
Once connected, SEOmatic, Approvals lists the fixes your agents prepared for this site, with a count next to the menu item. Each row says what the fix is and why.
- Approve opens SEOmatic's approve page, where you see the exact change before it goes live. Only signed-in members of your workspace can approve, so a copied link is useless to anyone else.
- Review shows instead on changes that could remove a page from Google, such as a noindex. They open the full review.
- Every change can be undone in SEOmatic, and fixes you keep live in your posts and your SEO plugin's fields, so they stay if you cancel.
Approved fixes that need the plugin wait until it is on your site. Your Agents board and Settings, Connections show how many, for example 3 fixes are waiting on SEOmatic AI, and they ship by themselves once it is installed. If Agent changes is off on Home, turn it on.
Set Up the AI Shopping Feed (WooCommerce)#
The feed lists every product and variation with price, availability, brand, GTIN, images and category, in the format ChatGPT shopping reads (JSONL), plus a CSV for other AI shopping programs. It is built on your server once a day, in batches, so large stores are fine. The plugin never contacts OpenAI or anyone else: you hand over the link. It is free and needs no account.
- In WordPress, open SEOmatic, AI shopping.
- Fix what the page lists first. Brand, image and description are required fields in the OpenAI feed spec.
- Under Feed, tick Publish my product feed. Optionally set Seller name, tick Own brand if you make what you sell, and set a Return window. Save.
- Wait for the first build, or click Rebuild. Copy the JSONL link under Your AI shopping feed.
- Apply at chatgpt.com/merchants. When OpenAI asks for your product feed, give them the JSONL link, or download the file and upload it where they ask.
Acceptance is up to OpenAI
Turning on the feed does not put your products in ChatGPT. OpenAI decides who is accepted, and the same goes for any other program you give the link to. Products appear in answers through the feed and shoppers buy on your store.
The link holds a random code, so only people you give it to can find it. If it was shared by mistake, click New link: the old files are deleted and you give the program the new address. Untick Publish my product feed to delete the files.
Privacy Switches#
- Nothing is sent before you press Connect. The free modules run on your own server.
- AI crawler and visit signals are sent once you connect: the crawler's name and page path, or the AI assistant a visitor came from. No IP address, and ordinary visitors are never logged. One checkbox turns them off.
- Site search sharing is off by default. Turn it on under Home to share what visitors type into your site search. Searches that look like an email address, a phone number or an order number are never sent.
- API keys are never shown in admin pages. A blank key field keeps the current key when you save.
- Instant indexing talks to IndexNow only after you switch it on.
Uninstall#
By default, uninstalling keeps your redirect rules, logs, facts and settings, so reinstalling loses nothing. Fixes written into your posts and your SEO plugin always stay. What the plugin serves itself, such as redirects and llms.txt, stops while it is not installed. To remove everything it stored, including the AI shopping feed files, tick Delete all of this plugin's data when uninstalling on Home before you uninstall. With that box ticked, the plugin's SEOmatic key is also revoked. Otherwise, click Disconnect before uninstalling if you want the connection gone too.
On a Site Your Agency Manages#
When an agency runs SEOmatic for you under its own brand, the plugin shows the agency's name instead of SEOmatic, and its links, Approve included, open the agency's client portal.
- Does it replace Yoast or Rank Math?
- No. Keep your SEO plugin. Agent fixes are written into its own fields.
- Can SEOmatic change my site without asking?
- No. Each change waits for your approval and can be undone.
- Will it slow my site down?
- No. Front-end work is limited to redirects, the optional llms.txt and a light check for AI crawler visits. Calls to SEOmatic happen after the page is sent, so visitors never wait on them.
