Track Your Google Rankings Every Day, City by City
Updated
Search Console tells you your average place across every city and device, a few days late. The Rank Tracker answers a different question: where do you rank today, for this search, for a customer standing in this city? It works with or without Search Console connected.
Add the Searches You Want to Track#
- In the sidebar, open Search Visibility > Keywords, then click Tracked at the top of the page.
- Click Add keywords. The Track Searches window opens and says how many more searches your plan has room for.
- Type your searches, one per line, for example emergency dentist portland.
- In Checked from, type a city and pick it from the list. Leave it empty to check the whole country.
- Tick Mobile, Desktop or both. Mobile is ticked by default.
- Optional: type a Service, for example Invisalign. Searches with the same service are grouped, so when they drop together you get one alert, not five.
- Check the cost under the form, for example About 13,500 credits a month from your allowance, and click Track.
First positions arrive within the hour. After that, every search is checked once a day at 04:30 UTC.
No idea where to start? Suggested to Track lists up to 6 searches from your Search Console data and your services. Click one to track it, or click Track all.
Read the Tracked Page#
| Count | What it means |
|---|---|
| In the Google Maps top 3 | Searches where you are one of the 3 businesses Google shows with the map, out of the searches that show a map at all. |
| On page one | Searches where your site is in the top 10 results. |
| In AI Overviews | Searches where Google's AI Overview names you, out of the searches that show one. ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants are tracked on AI Visibility instead. |
| Moved this week | Searches that went up or down 3 places or more in a week. |
- Click a count to chart it day by day over the last 30 days. Dots on the chart mark weeks when your agents changed your site.
- What Moved This Week lists each search that moved 3 places or more, entered or left the Google Maps top 3, or now ranks with a different page of your site. It says the cause when SEOmatic knows it, for example a competitor that now ranks above you.
- When a drop has a fix waiting, the row has a Review fix button. It opens the fix on the AI Agents board. See ranking alerts.
See Every Tracked Search#
Click All Tracked Searches at the bottom to open the full table. It is closed by default.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Today | Your place in Google's results, or Not in top 20. Checking means today's check is still running. Out of credits means it was skipped today. |
| 7 days and 30 days | How many places you gained or lost. |
| Search Console | Google's own average place for these words last week, across every city and device. It often differs from the daily check, which reads one results page from one city. |
| Last 10 checks | A small line of your last 10 places. It turns red when you are more than 2 places lower than 10 checks ago. |
| Maps top 3 | Your place in the Google Maps top 3, Not in top 3, or No map when Google shows no map for that search. |
| On the page | What else Google shows on the page, such as an AI Overview, People also ask or videos. |
| Ahead of you | The site, or the business on the map, that ranks above you. |
| AI Overview | Named or Not named when Google shows an AI Overview. |
- The device filter's Main device shows mobile for searches tracked on both devices.
- Export downloads a CSV of every tracked search with its latest check, changes, ranking page, Maps top 3 and AI Overview.
- To stop tracking a search, click the X at the end of its row. Its history is deleted and the room goes back to your plan.
Check Your Google Maps Place Across the City#
Where you show on Google Maps depends on where the customer stands. The city grid checks one search from points on a square around your business, about 3 miles each way, as a customer at each point would see it.
- Open All Tracked Searches and click the grid icon in the City grid column of a search.
- Pick a size: 3 x 3, 5 x 5 or 7 x 7 points. The window shows what it costs.
- Click Run grid. The squares fill in as Google answers, in about 15 minutes. You can close the window and come back.
Green is the top 3, amber is 4 to 10 and red is 11 or lower (20+ means not in the first 20). If your own pin was not found on the map, the grid is centred on the businesses Google shows for that search instead, and the window says so.
What It Costs, and Plan Limits#
| Credits | |
|---|---|
| One daily check of one search on one device | About 350, or about 550 when the page shows an AI Overview |
| 10 searches on mobile, checked every day for a month | About 135,000 |
| City grid, 3 x 3 | About 2,500 per run |
| City grid, 5 x 5 | About 5,700 per run |
| City grid, 7 x 7 | About 10,500 per run |

- Checks are paid from your AI credits at what Google's results really cost. Tracking a search on both devices doubles its credits; it still counts as one search.
- Your plan sets how many searches each site (workspace) can track: Launch 50, Scale 250, Infrastructure 1,000. A trial uses the limit of the plan you picked. The Free plan cannot track searches.
- The line at the top of the page says what your searches cost a month, for example about 135,000 credits a month.
- If your credits run out, the searches that could not be checked show Out of credits and a message says so. They are checked again the next morning when credits are available. Nothing is lost.
- Why does the daily check differ from Search Console?
- Search Console averages your place over a week, every city and every device. The daily check is one results page, today, from the city you picked. Both are right; they answer different questions.
- Who can add or remove searches?
- Members, Admins and the Owner. Viewers can read the page and open the city grid, but cannot change anything or run a new grid.
- Can I track a search in several cities?
- Yes. Add it once per city. Each city counts as one tracked search.
- Can I use it from Claude, ChatGPT or Slack?
- Yes. Ask your assistant "How are my tracked rankings this week?" or "Track emergency dentist in Portland". It shows the monthly cost and saves only after you say yes. See use SEOmatic inside Claude and ChatGPT.
