Undo a change that broke something, or see why one was rolled back
Updated
See exactly what changed#
- In the sidebar, click AI Agents.
- In the Live on your site list, find the change. The newest is at the top. Click Show all to see more.
- Click the change's name to open it.
- Read The change, line by line. Red lines were removed from your page. Green lines were added. What the agent added sums it up.
Undo a change from the board#
- In the Live on your site list, click Undo on the change's row.
- If nobody edited the page since, it goes back at once and you see a confirmation, such as "Undone. Your page is back to how it was."
- If you see "This page changed since the agent's edit", someone edited the page after the agent, possibly you. The box shows what is On the page right now. Click Undo anyway to put back the version from before the agent's change, which replaces that newer edit. Or click Keep the page as it is.
Not in the Live on your site list? That list only shows changes SEOmatic has seen on your live page. Click Live feed, point at the row marked Applied and click the undo icon.
Undo it by asking SEO Copilot#
Describe the problem in your own words, for example "the agent removed the map from my contact page". SEO Copilot finds the agent's change on that page and shows a card listing what it can restore, including any maps, videos or widgets from the old version. Click Undo this change. If the page was edited since, the card asks before replacing the newer version.
What undo puts back#
| What went wrong | What undo restores |
|---|---|
| Text went missing, or a map, video or widget disappeared | The page's full content from before the change, embeds included. |
| The title or description is wrong | The previous title, SEO title and meta description. |
| The page details for Google (schema) show the wrong business name or facts | The previous structured data. Then fix the facts in Settings > AI Agents > Trust Profile, so the next version is right. |
| A page was hidden from Google, or its "real address" tag changed | The previous setting. |
| Internal links were added in the wrong places | The content of each page the links were added to. |
| A new article went live that you do not want | On WordPress, Shopify, Ghost, Webflow, BigCommerce, Contentful and Blogger, undo turns it back into a draft. On other platforms, unpublish it in your platform. |
| A change on a site connected through GitHub | SEOmatic opens a restore pull request. Merge it on GitHub to undo the change. |
Some things cannot be undone: indexing requests and sitemap submissions (they change nothing on your page), batches of generated landing pages and batches of articles.
Why SEOmatic rolled back a change by itself#
After a change goes live, your agents compare that page's Google clicks with the rest of your site. A change counts as worse only when all of these are true:
- The change was applied to your site. A change SEOmatic found missing from your page is not judged.
- The page's clicks fell 15% or more compared with the rest of your site.
- The page lost at least 5 clicks.
- The drop is too big to be normal day-to-day noise.
When Google is rolling out a ranking update, a drop gets 7 more days before it is judged.
| What you see on the card | What happened | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Results got worse, so the agent put this page back as it was." | A small fix that can be undone in one click made things worse, so the agent undid it. | Nothing. The page is back to how it was. |
| "Results got worse. This one needs you to undo it - open the card to roll it back." | A bigger change made things worse. The agent leaves the decision to you. | Undo it from the Live on your site list or the Live feed, as above. The card's panel has no undo button. Or keep it if you think the drop has another cause. |
| "Results got worse and the agent could not undo it automatically - worth a look." The workspace owner also gets an email: "Action needed: a change on" a page "could not be undone". | The automatic undo failed, so the change is still on your page. Nothing else touches that page until you decide. | Click Roll it back in the email, or undo it from the board. |
"Went backwards, rolled back" does not always mean it was undone
The status line can say "Went backwards, rolled back" even when the change is still on your page and waiting for you. Read the line on the card to know which case you are in.
Undo many changes at once#
- One campaign: open the campaign and click Undo all changes. A page someone edited since is handed to you for review instead of being overwritten.
- Everything (admins and the owner): go to Settings > AI Agents > Agent Settings and click Undo all agent changes, then Undo everything. Pages go back oldest change first. Published articles are not deleted. Pages edited since are skipped and listed.
Good to know#
- No time limit. You can undo a change as long as it is still on your page.
- Works when billing has lapsed. Undo still works if your plan is no longer active, for example from the Roll it back link in our email.
- Who can undo. Members, admins and the owner. Viewers cannot.
- Changes put back by your site. SEOmatic re-checks live changes about once a week. If a theme update, plugin or import put the old value back, it applies the change again through the same safety checks. It does not overwrite a value someone else wrote, and it stops after a change has come back twice.
- Safety holds. Agents stop before overwriting a page someone edited mid-change, and before removing a map, video or widget. Those changes wait for you in Needs you.
- Does undoing cost credits?
- No. Undo does not use AI credits. It puts back what SEOmatic saved before the change.
- Will the agent make the same change again?
- It may propose similar work later. Dismissing the proposal, or adding the page to Protected Pages in Settings > AI Agents, keeps unattended work off that page.
