What Wix URLs look like by default
| Page type | Default URL | Can you change the prefix? |
|---|---|---|
| Regular page | yourdomain.com/your-slug | No prefix to change. Edit the slug in the page's SEO panel |
| Wix Stores product | yourdomain.com/product-page/your-slug | Yes. Change it or remove it for all products |
| Wix Blog post | yourdomain.com/post/your-slug | Rename only. It cannot be removed |
| Other app pages (for example events or bookings) | A prefix set by the app | Not through the URL structure setting |
Wix lets you customize the URL structure for two page types only: Wix Stores product pages and Wix Blog posts (Wix: customizing URL structure, checked October 2026).
How to remove /product-page/ from Wix product URLs
- In your dashboard, go to SEO & GEO.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings and click SEO Settings.
- Select Products.
- Click Edit next to Page URL.
- Change the structure. To drop the prefix, keep only the product slug variable. To use a different word, type it in place of
product-page, for exampleshop. - Keep the automatic redirect option on.
- Save and confirm.
The structure must include at least one variable, which in practice is the product slug (Wix). Wix's own Stores guide says you can "remove the 'product-page' prefix in your site's SEO Settings" (Wix Stores SEO).
Example on a fictional store: northwind-outdoors.com/product-page/2-person-tent becomes northwind-outdoors.com/2-person-tent or northwind-outdoors.com/tents/2-person-tent.
One caution: with no prefix, product slugs share the same space as your regular pages. Do not give a product the same slug as a page, like /about or /contact.
How to rename the /post/ prefix on a Wix blog
- Go to SEO & GEO > Tools and settings > SEO Settings.
- Select Blog posts.
- Click Edit next to Page URL and type the new word, for example
articlesorguides. - Keep the automatic redirect option on, then save.
Two rules from Wix (Wix blog URLs):
- "It is not possible to remove the 'post' prefix entirely, but you can rename it."
- The blog feed prefix and the post prefix cannot be the same. So
yourdomain.com/blog/post-titlewith both set toblogis not possible.
A common setup is a feed at /blog and posts at /articles/post-title. Pick one and keep it.
Prefix changes and redirects: what happens
"By default, Wix sets up automatic redirects for your site's pages when you customize the URL structure" (Wix). That covers the prefix change for every product or post at once.
What it does not cover:
- A changed blog post slug. If you later edit one post's own slug, Wix does not add a redirect. Add it by hand in the URL Redirect Manager. Our Wix 301 redirects guide shows how.
- Links you control. Menus, buttons and links inside your text still point to the old URL until you update them. Each one then costs a redirect hop.
- Links from other sites and old ads. These rely on the redirect, so never turn redirects off on a live site.
Before you change a prefix: a 6-step safety plan
- Ask if you need to. On a new site, pick the structure before launch. On an older site that ranks, the gain is small.
- Export your top URLs. In Search Console > Performance > Pages, export the product or post URLs that get clicks.
- Make the change with automatic redirects on.
- Test 5 old URLs in a private window. Each should land on the new URL in one hop.
- Update internal links in menus, buttons and key pages.
- Check Search Console after 1 to 2 weeks. Look at Indexing > Pages for new "Not found (404)" URLs. "Page with redirect" for old URLs is normal.
Does the URL prefix affect rankings?
Barely. Google says a URL should be simple and readable, using words that make sense to people (Google: URL structure best practices). /product-page/tent is readable. Removing a prefix will not move a product from page two to page one.
What does hurt is a change done badly: broken links, redirect chains, or thousands of URLs changing at once without redirects. Google moves signals to the new URL through a 301 (Google: redirects), but every recrawl takes time. Expect some movement for a few weeks after a site-wide URL change.
So: change prefixes on new sites freely. On established sites, change them only as part of a bigger cleanup, and with the plan above.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "I changed my Wix product URL prefix last week. Use gsc_indexing batch_inspect on my top 20 product URLs from gsc_performance top_pages, and tell me which old URLs are not redirecting or not indexed." This needs a free SEOmatic sign-in.
