When you need a redirect
A 301 redirect tells browsers and Google that a page has moved for good. Google then moves the old page's signals to the new address (Google). You need one when:
- You change a page or post URL (slug).
- You delete a page that has links or traffic and there is a close replacement.
- You move from another platform to Wix and URLs change.
- You change the product or blog URL prefix.
- You merge two pages about the same thing.
When Wix redirects for you, and when it does not
| You change the URL of... | Automatic 301? |
|---|---|
| A regular page (Editor) | Yes |
| A Wix Stores product or category | Yes |
| A Wix Bookings service | Yes |
| A Wix Events event | Yes |
| An Online Programs page | Yes |
| A Wix Blog post | No. Add it by hand. |
| The product URL prefix (all products) | Yes, if you tick the redirect box when saving |
The blog row is the trap. A post that earned links or ranked for a search loses it the day you "tidy up" its slug.
How to add one redirect
- In the Wix dashboard, go to SEO & GEO.
- Under Tools and settings, open URL Redirect Manager.
- Click New Redirect (Wix may label it "+ New Redirect").
- In "Old URL", enter the path only, like
/post/old-teeth-whitening-guide. - In "Redirects to", pick a page on your site or paste a full URL, including external ones.
- Save. The redirect takes a few minutes to start working. Then open the old URL in a private browser window to confirm it lands on the new page.
How to import many redirects with a CSV
Use this when you move a site to Wix or rename a whole section.
- Make a spreadsheet with two columns only: old URL in the first, new URL in the second. Put headers in row 1.
- One redirect per row. No more than 500 rows per file. Split bigger lists into several files.
- Save as CSV.
- In URL Redirect Manager, choose the import option and upload the file.
- Fix any rows Wix rejects and import them again.
- Spot-check 10 rows in a private window.
Our Wix SEO checklist includes a Redirect map sheet that flags blanks, duplicates, loops and chains before you export, and counts how many CSV files you need.
Five redirect mistakes to avoid
- Chains. If /a goes to /b and /b goes to /c, point /a straight to /c. Each hop slows people and wastes Google's crawl.
- Loops. A redirect that points to itself, or two that point at each other, breaks the page.
- Everything to the homepage. Google treats mass redirects to the homepage like "soft 404" errors, so the old page's value is lost anyway (Google). Send each old URL to its closest match, or let it 404.
- Free Wix address. Redirects only work on a custom domain. You cannot redirect from a free wixsite.com address.
- Hitting the cap. Wix counts every redirect, including the ones it made for you. Export the list once a year and delete redirects for URLs with no links and no clicks in 12 months.
How to check your redirects worked
- Open 5 to 10 old URLs in a private window. Each should land on the right page in one hop.
- After 1 to 2 weeks, open Search Console > Pages and look at "Not found (404)". Any old URL there needs a redirect.
- Look at "Page with redirect" in the same report. That is normal for old URLs; it only matters if a URL you want indexed shows up there.

How SEOmatic handles Wix redirects
SEOmatic can create 301 redirects on Wix through Wix's own Redirects API after you approve each one. It never overwrites an existing redirect from the same path, and every redirect it adds is recorded so you can undo it. It finds candidates from your Search Console data, such as old URLs that still get impressions but return 404.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use gsc_performance compare_periods by page on mysite.com and list old URLs that lost clicks or now return 404. Suggest a redirect target for each and stage the 301s with task_manage for my approval." This needs a free SEOmatic sign-in; redirects are only written after you approve them.
