Where the Wix robots.txt editor is
- In your dashboard, go to SEO & GEO.
- Scroll down to Tools and settings and click Robots.txt Editor.
- Click View File to see the current file. Edit it there and save.
To undo your edits, click Reset to Default, then Reset (Wix: editing robots.txt, checked October 2026).
Wix warns that this is an advanced feature: "Making changes to this file can cause issues with your site appearing in search results." Take that seriously. One wrong line can block your whole site.
You can always see the live file at yourdomain.com/robots.txt.
What the default Wix robots.txt allows
"Your site's robots.txt file allows search engine bots to access all of your site's pages by default" (Wix). Wix also lists your sitemap and keeps crawlers away from system URLs it does not want crawled.
For most Wix sites the right number of edits is zero.
When to edit it
Edit robots.txt only when you have a crawl problem you can name:
| Problem | Example rule | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A section you never want crawled, like internal test pages | Disallow: /test-pages/ | The pages can still show in Google if linked. Use noindex to keep them out |
| Endless URL variations, like a filter parameter | Disallow: /*?filter= | Only if those URLs do not need to be crawled at all |
| You want to stop an AI training bot | See the AI crawler section below | Check what each bot does first |
When not to edit it
- To hide a page from Google. Google says robots.txt "is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google" (Google Search Central). A blocked page can still appear in results if other pages link to it, and Google cannot see a noindex tag on a page it may not crawl. On Wix, turn off "Let search engines index this page" in the page's SEO panel instead.
- To block CSS, JavaScript or images. Google needs them to render your pages.
- To "clean up" the default file. Wix's own lines are there for a reason. Add your rules, do not delete theirs.
Disallow: /copied from a staging guide. It blocks the whole site.
AI crawlers: block training, keep search
AI companies now run separate bots for training and for search. Blocking the search bot can keep you out of AI answers that link to sources.
| Bot | Company | What it does | Usual choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects content for model training | Block if you do not want your text used for training |
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Finds pages for ChatGPT search results | Allow |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Fetches a page when a ChatGPT user asks for it | Allow |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Indexes pages for Perplexity answers | Allow |
| Google-Extended | Controls use in Gemini models; does not affect Google Search | Your choice |
Sources: OpenAI: bots, Google's common crawlers, Perplexity crawlers, checked October 2026.
A middle ground many sites use:
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /Add these lines below Wix's own rules. Wix's help on blocking AI crawlers adds two warnings: some crawlers ignore robots.txt, and blocking AI bots can limit Wix features that let AI agents read your site.
How to test after editing
- Open
yourdomain.com/robots.txtin a private window and read what is live. - In Search Console, open Settings > robots.txt. It shows the file Google last fetched and any errors.
- Run URL Inspection on your homepage and one product or post. "Blocked by robots.txt" means a rule matches. Find it.
- A week later, check Indexing > Pages for "Blocked by robots.txt". Every URL there should be one you meant to block.
If anything looks wrong, use Reset to Default and start again.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use check_site on mysite.com and tell me whether my Wix robots.txt blocks Googlebot or the AI search crawlers. Show me the exact lines to change." check_site is free and needs no sign-in.
