What Google says about website builders
Google does not rank a page higher or lower because it was built with Wix. Its own SEO Starter Guide treats the choice of system as a convenience question, not a ranking one (Google SEO Starter Guide). What Google reads is the page: its URL, title, text, links, speed and whether it can be crawled and indexed.
So the useful question is not "is Wix good for SEO" but "does Wix let me do the things that make a page rank?" For most sites, the answer is yes.
What Wix does for you out of the box
| Job | What Wix does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sitemap | Builds /sitemap.xml, updates it, submits it when you connect Google | Wix |
| Canonical tags | Adds a self-referencing canonical to every page | Wix |
| Structured data | Preset markup on products, posts, events, bookings; LocalBusiness on the homepage | Wix |
| Thin archive pages | Blog tag pages, monthly archives and member profiles are kept out of the index by default | Wix |
| Redirects on rename | Automatic 301 when you rename pages, products, services, events (not blog posts) | Wix |
| Multilingual | hreflang and x-default tags added for you | Wix |
| Speed data | Site Speed dashboard with real visitor Core Web Vitals | Wix |
On WordPress, half of that list needs a plugin you choose, install and keep updated. On Wix it is already on.
What you still control (and where most Wix sites fail)
Wix cannot write your content. The most common problems we see on Wix sites are not platform problems at all:
- Titles that say "Home | Site Name". The default title pattern uses the page name. If the page is called Home or Services, so is your search result.
- Blank meta descriptions. Wix leaves them empty on main pages, so Google builds its own snippet from whatever text it finds.
- Template filler text. "I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text" is indexed by Google like any other words.
- Headlines inside images. Beautiful hero images with the offer written on them carry no searchable text.
- Blog slugs changed after publishing. Wix does not create a redirect for these, so the old link breaks.
Every one of these is fixable in an afternoon. Our Wix SEO checklist lists all 85 checks with the exact menu path.
The real limits of Wix for SEO
These are the honest trade-offs, with numbers.
| Limit | Detail | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Redirect cap | 5,000 per site, 500 per CSV import, custom domain only | Big catalogs, sites migrating thousands of URLs |
| Blog URL prefix | /post/ can be renamed, not removed | People who want /blog/slug exactly |
| App prefixes | Some apps (events, bookings) use fixed prefixes | Rarely matters for rankings |
| Code-level control | No server access; Velo code must set SEO tags inside onReady | Developers building custom data pages |
| Bulk edits by API | Static page body text cannot be edited through any Wix API | Teams that want tools to rewrite page text for them |
If you run a 30-page service business site or a 300-product store, none of these will hold you back. If you run a 20,000-URL catalog or a heavily custom site, a platform with full server control may suit you better.
Wix vs WordPress vs Squarespace for SEO
| Item | Wix | WordPress | Squarespace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sitemap | Automatic | Automatic (core) or via SEO plugin | Automatic |
| Edit robots.txt | Yes (Robots.txt Editor) | Yes (plugin or file) | No |
| Redirect manager | Built in, 5,000 cap, CSV import | Plugin, no fixed cap | URL Mappings (text rules) |
| Custom structured data | Yes, JSON-LD, 5 per page | Yes, via plugin or code | Code injection only |
| Remove product URL prefix | Yes | Yes (permalinks) | No: products sit under the store page slug plus /p/ |
| Learning curve | Low | Medium to high | Low |
The best platform for SEO is usually the one you will keep updated. A Wix site with good titles and real content has a better chance than a neglected WordPress site.
Who should not pick Wix for SEO reasons
- Sites with tens of thousands of URLs that need complex redirect rules.
- Publishers who need full control of templates, headers and server rules.
- Teams that need to migrate in and out of platforms often.
Everyone else can stop worrying about the platform and work on the pages.
