About BigCommerce in SEOmatic
SEOmatic connects to BigCommerce with a store API account. Agents write new web pages and blog posts, rewrite the ones you already have, improve the titles, descriptions and search listings of your products, and can generate product pages in bulk when you approve a campaign.

Requirements
A BigCommerce store with owner or admin access. You create a store-level API account under Settings > API and grant it Content (modify), Products (modify) and Store Information (read-only). The access token is shown only once, so copy it before you close the dialog.
How to Fix BigCommerce SEO from Codex
Step 1: Connect BigCommerce to SEOmatic
SEOmatic connects to your BigCommerce store through the API, then works on the pages and posts you already have.
Step 1: In your BigCommerce admin, go to Settings, then API, then Store-level API accounts, and create an account with Content and Products set to modify. Copy the access token, which is only shown once.
Step 2: In SEOmatic, go to Connections and select BigCommerce. Paste the token and your store hash, which is the identifier in your admin URL.
Step 3: Agents read your Search Console data, find the pages losing clicks they should be winning, and propose the fixes with the reasoning attached.
Step 4: You approve what you want. Approved work is written to your store, logged as a diff you can read, and undone in one click if you change your mind.
Step 2: Connect SEOmatic to Codex
Run these two commands in your terminal. The second one opens your browser: sign in to SEOmatic and pick your site. The CLI and the IDE extension share the same config, so this covers both.
codex mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
codex mcp login seomaticOther ways to connect are on the Codex page.
Step 3: Ask Codex, Then Approve
Paste any of these. Codex answers from your data and stages the fix; you approve it before it reaches BigCommerce.
- “Which of my BigCommerce pages lost the most clicks this month, and why?”
- “Stage new titles for my BigCommerce pages with high impressions and low CTR.”
- “Find BigCommerce pages Google has not indexed and tell me what is blocking them.”
- “Audit my BigCommerce homepage and rank the fixes by impact.”
What Codex Can Change on BigCommerce
Web pages and blog posts, created new or rewritten in place: titles, body content, slugs and meta descriptions.
The agent arrives switched off and starts in approval mode. It earns more rope only when you give it.
Editing a hidden page, product or blog post leaves it hidden. An edit never changes visibility, and a product edit never touches price or weight.
SEOmatic reads the real page back from your store, so the before and after you approve is the live content.
Any change rolls back to its previous value. Low-risk edits that cost you traffic revert on their own.
Web pages and blog posts live behind different BigCommerce APIs. Each edit is routed to the one that owns that page.
Product pages generated from your catalogue with descriptions, images and page titles when you approve a campaign.
Anything the API will not accept, like a meta title on a blog post, is reported back to you, never marked as done. A value saved but not yet on your live page stays pending until it shows.
Everything goes through the store API, so your existing templates decide how it all looks.
BigCommerce gives you no built-in way to write a distinct meta description for every product, so on a large catalogue it is hand-written or it is duplicated. Agents are the third option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Codex fix SEO on my BigCommerce site?
Yes, through SEOmatic. Codex reads your Google Search Console data, finds what is holding your BigCommerce pages back and stages the fix. SEOmatic connects to BigCommerce with a store API account. Agents write new web pages and blog posts, rewrite the ones you already have, improve the titles, descriptions and search listings of your products, and can generate product pages in bulk when you approve a campaign.
What can Codex change on BigCommerce?
Writes And Rewrites Pages: Web pages and blog posts, created new or rewritten in place: titles, body content, slugs and meta descriptions. Nothing Applies Without You: The agent arrives switched off and starts in approval mode. It earns more rope only when you give it. Drafts Stay Drafts: Editing a hidden page, product or blog post leaves it hidden. An edit never changes visibility, and a product edit never touches price or weight. A Diff For Every Change: SEOmatic reads the real page back from your store, so the before and after you approve is the live content. One Click Revert: Any change rolls back to its previous value. Low-risk edits that cost you traffic revert on their own. Right API, Right Page: Web pages and blog posts live behind different BigCommerce APIs. Each edit is routed to the one that owns that page.
What do I need to connect BigCommerce?
A BigCommerce store with owner or admin access. You create a store-level API account under Settings API and grant it Content (modify), Products (modify) and Store Information (read-only). The access token is shown only once, so copy it before you close the dialog.
What do I need on the Codex side?
Codex (the CLI, the IDE extension or the desktop app) signed in with your ChatGPT account, and a free SEOmatic account. No API key needed for the browser sign-in.
Will Codex publish to BigCommerce without asking?
No. By default every change SEOmatic proposes waits for your approval before it touches your site, and your assistant is told never to approve on its own. Approved changes are stored with the page's previous state, so any edit to an existing page can be rolled back. If you later want low-risk fixes to go ahead on their own, you can turn that on in your autonomy settings; changes to your URLs or indexing, and new content, still wait for you.
Is it free?
Connecting is free with no card: 5 questions a month from your own data, plus 10 once you connect Search Console, and site audits of up to 30 pages. Staging and publishing fixes is part of paid plans, which start with a 14-day free trial.
