Requirements
A Shopify store on a paid plan, with store owner or staff admin access. You create a custom app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard and paste its Client ID and Secret. It needs write access to Store content and Products, read access to Themes, and read and write on Publications, Metaobject definitions and Metaobjects.
How to Fix Shopify SEO from Codex
Step 1: Connect Shopify to SEOmatic
SEOmatic connects to your Shopify store through the Admin API, then goes to work on the pages and articles you already have.
Step 1: Create a custom app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard and copy its Client ID and Client Secret.
Step 2: In SEOmatic, go to Connections and select Shopify. Enter your store domain and both credentials. SEOmatic validates them and warns you about any missing permission before you finish.
Step 3: Agents read your Search Console data, find the pages losing clicks they should be winning, and propose the fixes with the reasoning attached, from a new title to a full content refresh.
Step 4: You approve what you want. Approved work is written to your store, logged as a diff you can read, and undone in one click if you change your mind.
Step 2: Connect SEOmatic to Codex
Run these two commands in your terminal. The second one opens your browser: sign in to SEOmatic and pick your site. The CLI and the IDE extension share the same config, so this covers both.
codex mcp add seomatic --url https://app.seomatic.ai/api/mcp
codex mcp login seomaticOther ways to connect are on the Codex page.
Step 3: Ask Codex, Then Approve
Paste any of these. Codex answers from your data and stages the fix; you approve it before it reaches Shopify.
- “Which of my Shopify pages lost the most clicks this month, and why?”
- “Stage new titles for my Shopify pages with high impressions and low CTR.”
- “Find Shopify pages Google has not indexed and tell me what is blocking them.”
- “Audit my Shopify homepage and rank the fixes by impact.”
What Codex Can Change on Shopify
Full blog posts from research to published draft: brief, article, featured image, tags and meta, straight into your store blog.
Collection, comparison and buying-guide pages generated in bulk from your catalogue and your real search data.
Rewrites listings, refreshes stale content, adds FAQ blocks and repairs broken links on live pages and articles.
The agent arrives switched off and starts in approval mode. It earns more rope only when you give it.
A before and after view with the reasoning attached, so you see what changed and why.
Any change rolls back to its exact previous value. Low-risk edits that cost you traffic revert on their own.
Collections built from product rules: tag, price, type, vendor or any mix, so they keep filling as your catalogue grows.
Product pages with descriptions, images, vendor, type and tags, plus any metaobject definition in your store.
Agents read your Search Console, spot cannibalising pages and near-miss queries, and decide what to do next.
Agents handle the whole loop: finding what your buyers search for, writing and building the pages to catch it, and keeping what you already published from going stale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Codex fix SEO on my Shopify site?
Yes, through SEOmatic. Codex reads your Google Search Console data, finds what is holding your Shopify pages back and stages the fix. SEOmatic connects to Shopify through the Admin API. Agents rewrite and refresh the pages and articles you already have, and can build out collections, products and metaobjects in bulk when you approve a campaign.
What can Codex change on Shopify?
Writes The Articles: Full blog posts from research to published draft: brief, article, featured image, tags and meta, straight into your store blog. Builds The Pages You Are Missing: Collection, comparison and buying-guide pages generated in bulk from your catalogue and your real search data. Fixes The Pages You Have: Rewrites listings, refreshes stale content, adds FAQ blocks and repairs broken links on live pages and articles. Nothing Applies Without You: The agent arrives switched off and starts in approval mode. It earns more rope only when you give it. A Diff For Every Change: A before and after view with the reasoning attached, so you see what changed and why. One Click Revert: Any change rolls back to its exact previous value. Low-risk edits that cost you traffic revert on their own.
What do I need to connect Shopify?
A Shopify store on a paid plan, with store owner or staff admin access. You create a custom app in the Shopify Dev Dashboard and paste its Client ID and Secret. It needs write access to Store content and Products, read access to Themes, and read and write on Publications, Metaobject definitions and Metaobjects.
What do I need on the Codex side?
Codex (the CLI, the IDE extension or the desktop app) signed in with your ChatGPT account, and a free SEOmatic account. No API key needed for the browser sign-in.
Will Codex publish to Shopify without asking?
No. By default every change SEOmatic proposes waits for your approval before it touches your site, and your assistant is told never to approve on its own. Approved changes are stored with the page's previous state, so any edit to an existing page can be rolled back. If you later want low-risk fixes to go ahead on their own, you can turn that on in your autonomy settings; changes to your URLs or indexing, and new content, still wait for you.
Is it free?
Connecting is free with no card: 5 questions a month from your own data, plus 10 once you connect Search Console, and site audits of up to 30 pages. Staging and publishing fixes is part of paid plans, which start with a 14-day free trial.
