Why Shopify ignores your redirect: the 404 rule
Shopify's help center says it plainly: "You can redirect only from broken URLs. Broken URLs display error messages, such as Page not found or 404" (Shopify Help Center, URL redirects, checked October 2026).
That rule is the cause of most "my redirect does nothing" posts. A common case on a fictional store, northwind-outdoors.com:
- The owner makes a new product, "Trail Pack 22L", to replace "Trail Pack 20L".
- They add a redirect from
/products/trail-pack-20lto/products/trail-pack-22l. - They leave the old product active, marked sold out.
- Visitors and Google still land on the old page. The redirect is saved, but Shopify never uses it, because the old URL is not broken.
The fix is to take the old product off the Online Store: archive it, set it to draft, remove it from the Online Store sales channel, or delete it. The moment the old URL returns a 404, the redirect takes over.
Where redirects live in Shopify
Go to Content > Menus, then click View URL redirects. From there you can create one redirect, edit or delete existing ones, export them, or import many at once from a CSV file.
A store can have up to 100,000 URL redirects. Stores on Shopify Plus can have up to 20,000,000 (Shopify Help Center).
Six reasons a Shopify redirect fails
| # | Cause | How to spot it | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The old URL still works | Open the old URL in a private window. If a page loads, this is it | Archive, unpublish or delete the old item |
| 2 | Typo or extra slash in "Redirect from" | Compare the saved path with the URL Google shows in Search Console, letter by letter | Enter the path exactly, starting with /, for example /products/trail-pack-20l |
| 3 | Full address pasted into "Redirect from" | The field shows https://northwind-outdoors.com/... | Use only the path. The "Redirect to" field can take a full URL, "Redirect from" should not |
| 4 | The old URL has a query string | The URL contains ?, for example from an old platform like /brands/dell.html?_bc_fsnf=1 | Shopify warns these "might not work as expected". Redirect the clean path, and accept that some query URLs will 404 |
| 5 | A redirect or SEO app overrides Shopify | You use an app that also manages redirects or 404s | Keep one system. Check the app's own redirect list |
| 6 | You are looking at a cached result | The redirect works in a private window but not in your normal browser | Clear the browser cache. Browsers cache 301s hard |
Changing a handle: leave the redirect box ticked
When you change the URL handle of a product, collection, page or blog post in the Search engine listing section, Shopify shows a checkbox to create a URL redirect from the old address to the new one. Leave it ticked. If you untick it, the old URL becomes a 404, and every link and ranking it had starts to fade.
After you save, check Content > Menus > View URL redirects. The new redirect should be at the top of the list.
Chains and loops after many renames
Rename a product three times and you can end up with:
/products/pack-ato/products/pack-b/products/pack-bto/products/pack-c
That is a chain. Google follows up to 10 redirect hops, but each hop wastes crawl time and some tools and browsers give up sooner (Google Search Central, HTTP status codes, checked October 2026). Edit the first redirect so it points straight to /products/pack-c.
A loop is worse: /a goes to /b and /b goes back to /a. The page never loads. Search your redirect list for the URL in both columns and remove one side.
Importing redirects by CSV after a migration
When you move from WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce or another platform, almost every old URL changes. Do this before you switch the domain:
- Export every old URL that had clicks or links. Search Console > Performance > Pages (last 16 months) is a good start.
- Map each one to the closest new Shopify URL: product to product, category to collection, article to article. Not everything to the home page.
- In Content > Menus > View URL redirects, click Import, upload the CSV built from Shopify's template, review the preview and click Import redirects.
- Spot check 20 rows by hand after the import.
Our redirect mapping template has a sheet for step 2.
How to test a redirect
- Open the old URL in a private window. You should land on the new URL.
- Run the old URL through our free redirect checker. You want one hop: a 301, then a 200 on the new URL. A 302, or more than one hop, needs fixing.
- For important pages, use URL Inspection in Search Console on the new URL and click Request indexing.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use check_site on mystore.com, then after I connect Search Console run site_audit and list dead pages and broken internal links. For each old URL that still gets clicks, suggest the closest live product or collection and stage a redirect with task_manage create for my approval." check_site is free and needs no sign-in. Nothing changes on your store until you approve it.
