Where the setting lives
Products, collections, pages and blog posts each have a Search engine listing box at the bottom of their edit screen. The home page does not. That is why so many store owners cannot find it.
- In the Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Preferences.
- Find the Social sharing image and SEO section.
- Enter the home page title.
- Enter the home page meta description.
- Click Save.
Shopify says you can enter up to 70 characters in the title but recommends keeping it to 60 so it is not cut off in results, and recommends about 160 characters for the description (Shopify Help Center, SEO titles and descriptions, checked October 2026).
If you never filled it in, most themes show your store name alone. That wastes the most-visited title on your site.
A title pattern that works
What you sell + one detail that sets you apart | Brand
Lead with the words people search, not a slogan. Five examples for fictional stores:
| Store type | Home page title | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor gear | Hiking Packs and Trail Gear, Free US Returns, Northwind Outdoors | 59 |
| Coffee | Small-Batch Coffee Beans, Roasted Weekly, Ember and Oak | 55 |
| Jewelry | Handmade Silver Rings and Necklaces, Juniper Lane | 49 |
| Pet food | Grain-Free Dog Food Delivered Monthly, Barkside | 47 |
| Skincare | Fragrance-Free Skincare for Sensitive Skin, Calmleaf | 52 |
Tips:
- Put the main product type in the first 30 characters.
- One detail that is true and checkable: "roasted weekly", "free US returns", "handmade". No "best" or "#1".
- If your brand name is already well known, it can go first.
- Do not repeat the same title on your collection pages.
Writing the home page meta description
Google does not rank on the meta description, but it often shows it as the text under your title, and a clear one earns more clicks. Two sentences:
- What you sell, to whom, and what makes it different.
- One reason to click: shipping, returns, range or price point.
Example: *Hiking packs, tents and trail clothing tested on real routes. Free shipping over $75 and 60-day returns from our Oregon warehouse.* (130 characters)
Google may still pick text from your page instead. It does that when it thinks page text matches a search better (Google Search Central, snippets).
Why Google shows a different title
Google builds the "title link" in results from your title tag, but it also looks at your H1, other headings, social titles and link text. It may rewrite titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, or that do not match the page (Google Search Central, title links).
If Google keeps showing something else:
- Make sure the home page has one visible H1 that agrees with the title. Many Shopify themes have no H1 on the home page, or use the logo as the H1.
- Remove repeated keywords from the title.
- Check the theme does not print the store name twice.
The social sharing image
On the same Preferences screen you can upload a social sharing image. Shopify uses it when someone shares your home page on social apps and in chat apps. Use a wide image with your logo and a real product, not a blank banner. 1200 x 630 pixels is a safe size for most social apps.
How to check the change
- Open your home page, right-click, choose View page source, and search for
<title>. It should show your new title. - In Search Console, run URL Inspection on your home page and click Request indexing.
- After a week or two, search for your brand name and check the result.
- In Search Console > Performance, compare clicks to the home page for 28 days before and after the change.
Can a tool change this for you?
Shopify does not offer a way for outside apps to write the home page title and meta. SEOmatic can draft the title and description for you from your Search Console queries, but you paste them into Online Store > Preferences yourself.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use site_pages (action crawl) on mystore.com's home page and show me the current title, meta description and H1. After I connect Search Console, use gsc_performance (action top_queries) to find the non-brand searches my home page shows for, and draft 3 home page titles under 60 characters and one meta description." Sign-in is free. You paste the result into Online Store > Preferences yourself.
