What "Page with redirect" means
You find this row in Search Console under Indexing > Pages > Why pages aren't indexed. Every URL in it answers with a redirect (usually a 301 or 302) when Googlebot visits.
Google cannot index a redirect, because there is no page there, only a pointer. So it follows the redirect and indexes the target. The old URL lands in this row. That is the system working.
Common reasons a site has these URLs:
- The site moved from http to https, or from www to non-www (or the other way).
- A page's slug changed and the CMS added a redirect.
- Two pages were merged, and one now redirects to the other.
- A trailing slash rule sends
/pageto/page/. - A shop renamed a product handle and kept a redirect.
Page with redirect vs Redirect error
They sound alike, but one is fine and the other is a block.
| Item | Page with redirect | Redirect error |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | The redirect worked | The redirect broke |
| Google's call | Indexes the target | Cannot reach any page |
| Typical cause | https move, slug change, merge | Loop, chain too long, bad URL in the chain |
| Your action | Usually none | Fix it now |
Google lists the redirect errors as "a redirect chain that was too long, a redirect loop, a redirect URL that eventually exceeded the max URL length, a bad or empty URL in the redirect chain." Google's crawlers follow up to 10 redirect hops (Google, HTTP status codes, updated February 2026).
3 cases that need action
1. The destination is wrong. Open a few example URLs. Does each one land on the page that replaced it? A redirect from an old product to your homepage, or a chain that ends on a 404, is a real problem. Point each old URL straight at its closest match.
2. Redirected URLs are still in your sitemap. A sitemap should list only the final URLs you want indexed. Switch the report filter to All submitted pages. If "Page with redirect" still shows up, your sitemap lists old URLs.
3. Your own pages link to redirected URLs. Menus, footers and old posts often link to the http version or an old slug. Each link adds a hop and sends a mixed signal. Update the links to the final URL.
Also check for chains: if A redirects to B and B redirects to C, change A to point straight at C.
How to clean up redirected URLs, by platform
| Platform | Sitemap | Links and redirects |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Yoast and Rank Math build the sitemap from published posts, so a stale sitemap usually means a caching or plugin conflict. Clear the cache and reload /sitemap_index.xml | Update old links with a search-and-replace plugin. Manage redirects in Rank Math > Redirections, Yoast Premium > Redirects, or the Redirection plugin |
| Shopify | Shopify builds sitemap.xml for you and lists only live URLs | Fix menu links in Content > Menus. Redirects live in Content > Menus > View URL redirects |
| Webflow | Turn on the auto-generated sitemap in Site settings > SEO | 301 redirects live in Site settings > Publishing > 301 redirects |
| Wix | Wix builds the sitemap for you | Redirects live in the URL Redirect Manager in the SEO settings |
How to check the destination is indexed
The old URL does not matter much. The target does.
- In URL Inspection, paste the target URL, not the old one.
- If it says "URL is on Google", you are done.
- If the target is itself not indexed, it has its own reason. Check the hub for that reason.

How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Sign me in with connect_seomatic. Check my sitemaps with gsc_insights (action: sitemaps), then run site_audit and list any sitemap URLs or internal links that point to redirected or dead pages. Stage the link fixes for my approval." Nothing on your site changes until you approve.
