The 7 checks below go from the most common cause to the rarest, and each takes a few minutes. Google is clear that it does not guarantee to crawl or index every page (Google, how Search works), so the goal is to remove what stops it.
First: Indexed or Not?
| What you search | What you see | What it means |
|---|---|---|
site:yourdomain.com | No results | Google has not indexed your site. Start at check 1 |
site:yourdomain.com | Some pages, not the one you want | That page is not indexed. Check it in URL Inspection (check 4) |
| Your business name | Your site does not show | Indexed but not ranking yet, or a name others also use. See check 7 |
| Your main service and city | Your site is on page 3 or later | A ranking problem, not an indexing one. See check 7 |
The site: search is a quick test, not a full count. For the real list, use Search Console.
1. The Site Is New
Google finds new sites mostly through links and sitemaps. A site launched last week with no links pointing to it can take days to weeks to appear. Speed it up: add the site to Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, and get one or two real links from places that already exist, like your Google Business Profile or a social profile.
2. A Noindex Tag Tells Google to Stay Out
A noindex rule in the page code tells Google not to index it. Sites often launch with it still on from the build. On WordPress, the most common cause is the "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" box under Settings > Reading. See Excluded by noindex tag for every platform, and the WordPress box in detail.
3. robots.txt Blocks Google
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. A line Disallow: / under User-agent: * blocks every crawler from the whole site. Remove it unless you meant it. Details in Blocked by robots.txt.
4. Check the Page in URL Inspection
In Search Console, paste the full URL into the search bar at the top. "URL is on Google" means it is indexed. "URL is not on Google" comes with a reason, like "Crawled - currently not indexed" or "Excluded by 'noindex' tag". Each reason has its own fix, listed in the Page indexing fix guide.
5. The Site Is Behind a Password or Still on a Staging Address
Google cannot index pages that need a password, and it does not index a store with a storefront password. Also check you connected the real domain: a site that only lives at a builder address (like yoursite.webflow.io or yourstore.myshopify.com) is a different site to Google.
6. A Manual Action or Security Issue
Rare, but check it: in Search Console, open Security & Manual Actions. If Google has applied a manual action or found hacked content, it says so there, with what to fix and how to request a review.
7. Indexed but Not Ranking
If your pages are indexed, the problem is ranking. Common causes: the page does not use the words people search, it is thin next to the pages that rank, or few other pages link to it. In Search Console, open Performance, look at the searches each page already shows for, and write the title and first paragraph in those words.
How to Get Google to Index Your Site
- Add and verify the site in Google Search Console.
- Submit your sitemap under Indexing > Sitemaps (most platforms build it at
/sitemap.xml). - Remove any noindex tag and robots.txt block on pages you want found.
- Link to each important page from your homepage or menu, so Google can reach it in a click or two.
- For a new or changed page, use URL Inspection and click Request indexing. Google says this does not guarantee indexing, and asking again does not speed it up.
Then wait and watch the Page indexing report. If pages land in "Crawled - currently not indexed" or "Discovered - currently not indexed", their pages explain why: crawled, discovered.
How to Use This with an AI Assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Sign me in with connect_seomatic. Use gsc_indexing (action: batch_inspect) on my 10 most important URLs and tell me which are not on Google and why. Then stage the fixes for my approval." In Approval mode, nothing on your site changes until you approve.
Let the Agents Fix Your Indexing Problems
SEOmatic's AI agents read your own Google Search Console data and fix what keeps pages out of Google, directly in your CMS:
- Remove stray noindex tags and correct canonicals on pages that should rank
- Fix robots.txt rules that block pages you want in Google
- Submit your sitemap and request indexing for pages that are ready
Each change can wait for your approval, one click undoes it, and the agents check it against how the rest of your site did. What they can change depends on your platform, and you see the full list before anything runs.
