Find programmatic SEO patterns with Search Console regex filters
Short answer: In Search Console's Performance report, filter queries with Custom (regex) to pull out repeated patterns like comparisons, integrations, places and prices. Pick the pattern with many queries, real impressions and an average position between 8 and 40.
Your query list has hundreds of rows. Read them one by one and you miss the patterns. Search Console has a regex filter that pulls them out in seconds.
In Performance, click Add filter, pick Query, and change the match type to Custom (regex). Then paste one of these:
\b(vs|versus)\bfinds comparison searches.alternative|instead of|similar tofinds people leaving a competitor.integrat|connect|sync|zapierfinds integration searches.near me|\bin [a-z]+finds place searches.price|pricing|cost|how muchfinds money questions.
For each filter, write down 3 numbers: how many queries match, total impressions, and average position.
Example: a project management tool
integrat|connect|sync: 186 queries, 9,400 impressions, average position 27.
\b(vs|versus)\b: 41 queries, 2,100 impressions, average position 14.
Reading it: integrations is the bigger set, and the site sits far from page 1 for it. That usually means no page targets it yet. Integrations go first.
The sweet spot is many queries, real impressions, and an average position between 8 and 40. Position 1 to 5 means you already win it. No impressions means demand is still a guess.
Your 10-minute task: Run the 5 filters
- Run each regex above on the last 3 months.
- Write down queries, impressions and average position for each one.
- Write a regex for your best idea from lesson 2 and run it too.
- Circle the pattern with the most impressions in the 8 to 40 range. That is your first page set.
