How SEOmatic Instant Indexing Works
Open Instant Indexing, tick Tell the engines automatically and save. From then on, publishing, updating or unpublishing a post sends your site's hostname, your IndexNow key, the URL of your key file and the changed URLs to api.indexnow.org, which forwards them to the participating engines. No page content and nothing about your visitors is ever sent, and nothing at all is sent before you turn submissions on.
What about Google? IndexNow does not submit to Google, because Google has never supported it. Google's Indexing API officially only covers job postings and live-stream event pages. For ordinary pages, what works is your sitemap, your internal links and Search Console, and the plugin says so rather than selling you a button that does nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to upload a key file?
No. That is the entire point of using a plugin for this. WordPress serves the file for you at the address shown on the settings page.
Does this submit to Google?
No, and nothing can: Google does not support IndexNow. What gets ordinary pages into Google is your sitemap, your internal links and Search Console.
Will it slow down publishing?
No. The submission is sent after your page has already loaded, so the editor never waits for it.
Something says 403. What does that mean?
The engines could not read your key file. Press 'Check my key file': it requests the file at its public address, logged out, and tells you what comes back, such as a maintenance mode plugin or basic authentication. A firewall rule that only blocks outside bots may not show up in that check, so if the engines still see 403, look there too.
Do I need a SEOmatic account?
No. The plugin is complete on its own and always will be.
