SEO Writer: The Safe Door Into Your SEO Plugin
WordPress lets an app edit a post's title and content, but the SEO title, meta description, canonical and noindex belong to your SEO plugin, and on a standard install the big four do not reliably accept those writes from outside. Yoast's REST API is read-only. SEO Writer adds two small, authenticated endpoints that write through each SEO plugin's own storage, so the changes you approve in SEOmatic actually land.

How SEO Writer for WordPress Works
The plugin has no screen of its own. Once it is active, SEOmatic sends each approved SEO change to one of its two REST endpoints, authenticated as the WordPress user you connected with.
Posts and pages: SEO title, meta description, canonical URL and noindex, written into each active SEO plugin's own fields.
Categories and tags: SEO title and meta description, on Yoast SEO, Rank Math and AIOSEO Pro. SEOPress has no way to store per-category SEO from outside, so there the plugin reports the field as not written instead of pretending.
Every write is read back, and the plugin reports exactly which fields stuck. SEOmatic only calls a change applied when the plugin confirms it.

Your Permissions Decide
A write to a post needs the same edit_post permission WordPress already requires to edit that post, and a term needs the permission to edit that term.
Refuses Rather Than Guesses
If WordPress's own sanitising would change a value, such as stray HTML or an invalid URL, the field is refused and reported, never saved in altered form.
Every Write Read Back
A field only counts as written if it stuck. With two SEO plugins active, it only counts when both stored it.
Clearing Is Deliberate
On a category or tag, an empty value is ignored instead of wiping your title. On a post, an empty value resets the field to your SEO plugin's default, which is how an undo restores a field that was empty before.
A Fixed List of Fields
It writes each SEO plugin's documented fields and nothing else, so it cannot be used to write arbitrary data.
Nothing Leaves Your Site
No outbound requests, no tracking, no settings. It only answers requests sent to your own REST API by a user allowed to edit that content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I need this if SEOmatic already connects to WordPress?
SEOmatic edits your content through WordPress's REST API, but your SEO plugin keeps the SEO title, description, canonical and noindex where that API cannot always write them. Stock Yoast is the strictest: its REST API is read-only, so a normal write simply does nothing. Without SEO Writer, SEOmatic notices and hands you the text to paste. With it, those fields land directly.
Which SEO plugins does it support?
For posts and pages: Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress. For categories and tags: Yoast SEO, Rank Math and AIOSEO Pro, since the free AIOSEO has no per-term SEO fields. SEOPress category SEO is reported as not written, and SEOmatic gives you the text to paste there.
Can someone use it to change my site?
Only a logged-in user, or an Application Password belonging to a user, who is already allowed to edit that post or term. It grants no permission they did not already have.
Does it slow my site down?
No. It does nothing on normal page views. It only runs when one of its two REST endpoints is called.
What happens when I uninstall it?
The plugin has no settings, options or tables of its own, so there is nothing to clean up. The SEO fields it wrote stay in your SEO plugin and keep working.
