How SEOmatic Redirects Works
Add a rule and it applies straight away. Switch on 404 logging and the plugin records which missing pages are being requested, each labelled by where the traffic came from: linked from another site, from search, or direct. A vulnerability scanner hammering one dead path 900 times is not more urgent than the single broken link a real publication points at, so the log ranks by what is worth fixing.
404 logging is off until you turn it on, because recording every 404 on a busy site is real work for your server. If Redirection, 301 Redirects, Simple 301 Redirects or Safe Redirect Manager is already active, the plugin steps aside and says so plainly, since two plugins racing to redirect the same request is how loops happen.
The Mistakes It Refuses to Let You Make
No Hiding Live Pages
It will not redirect a path where a published page still lives.
No Lockouts
Rules touching wp-login.php, wp-admin, the REST API or your sitemap are refused.
No Loops
Including the indirect kind, where A goes to B and B already goes back to A.
No Chains
A to B to C is collapsed to A to C when you save it, so visitors take one hop.
Hit Counts That Cost Nothing
Matching costs one array lookup and no database query; hit counts are written after the response has already been sent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a SEOmatic account?
No. The redirect manager and the 404 log work entirely on their own, for free, with no account.
Will this conflict with Redirection or another redirect plugin?
No. If one of those is active, this plugin does not handle redirects at all and tells you so.
Does it support regular expressions?
Not yet, deliberately. A mistaken regex can redirect an entire site, and exact-path rules cover the overwhelming majority of real cases safely.
How many redirects can it hold?
Up to 500. The rules are preloaded on every request so matching costs nothing, which means the list has to stay small. Past 500, redirects belong in your server configuration, and the plugin says so.
What is sent to SEOmatic if I connect?
It requests the redirect rules SEOmatic has approved for your site, tells SEOmatic when you apply one, and, if 404 logging is on, sends a daily dead-link map: each missing path, its source class and its hit count. Never a referring URL, never an IP address, never visitor data.
