1. Fill the SEO and URL fields
Open the product (double-click it), go to Marketing > SEO and URL, and click Edit. You can set the URL, the SEO title, the SEO description and a separate social sharing image (Squarespace: add products).
If you skip the SEO description, Squarespace uses the product description, which often starts with care instructions or a size chart.
2. Write product titles people search
Shoppers search for the product type plus a detail: "2 person backpacking tent", "linen duvet cover queen". A brand-only name like "The Aspen" tells Google little.
| Weak | Better |
|---|---|
| The Aspen | The Aspen 2-Person Backpacking Tent, 3 lb |
| Blue Mug | Handmade Stoneware Mug, Ocean Blue, 12 oz |
Keep the shop-facing product name if you like it. Put the searched words in the SEO title.
3. Keep URLs short, and fix them before launch
Squarespace slugs are lowercase and use dashes, up to 200 characters for products (Squarespace: URL slugs). In version 7.1, product URLs include a fixed /p/ part that cannot be removed. That is fine for rankings.
Changing a slug later breaks old links, because Squarespace does not redirect a changed slug. Add a 301 in URL mappings: Squarespace 301 redirects.
4. Replace supplier descriptions
If you copied the maker's text, so did every other shop selling the product. Google tends to show one version of the same text and filter the rest. Write your own for your top 20 sellers first: who it is for, what makes it different, sizes, materials and care, in plain words. Add a short FAQ for the questions customers email you about.
5. Add alt text to every product image
In the product editor, click Images, click ... on an image, then Edit Metadata to add alt text of up to 200 characters. If you leave it blank, the product name becomes the alt text (Squarespace: alt text).
So five photos of one tent all say "The Aspen". Describe each view instead: "Aspen tent with rain fly, side view", "Aspen tent vestibule open". Google uses alt text to understand images (Google image SEO).
6. Let the Product schema work for you
Squarespace adds Product structured data automatically, and you cannot edit or remove it. It can include the product name, image, description, price range, availability and URL (How Squarespace optimizes your site).
Your job is to keep the inputs right: correct prices, real stock levels, good images. Check one product in Google's Rich Results Test to see what Google reads. Do not add a second Product markup through code injection, or Google sees two conflicting versions.
7. Handle sold-out and discontinued products
Squarespace's help center warns that phrases like "no longer available", "item not available" or "not in stock" can lead Google to treat a page as a soft 404 (Squarespace: Google SEO errors).
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sold out, coming back | Keep the page. Say when it returns, and link to similar products |
| Gone for good, close replacement exists | Delete it and add a 301 to the replacement |
| Gone for good, nothing similar | Delete it and let it return 404, or 301 to the category if it truly fits |
Never send every old product to the homepage. Google treats mass redirects like that as soft 404s too. More in our indexing problems fix guide.
8. Give store and category pages real text
Your shop page and categories often rank for broader searches like "camping tents denver". Add a short intro at the top of the store page: what you sell, who it is for, shipping basics. Link from blog posts to the matching products and categories.
Doing 100 products without 100 hours
Start with products that already get impressions: Search Console > Performance > Pages, filtered to /p/. Those are the pages where better titles pay off fastest. SEOmatic can write product titles, descriptions, SEO fields and image alt text to Squarespace Commerce from your Search Console data; nothing goes live until you approve each change.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use gsc_performance query_pages on mysite.com for my /p/ product URLs, find products with many impressions and few clicks, and draft new SEO titles, descriptions and image alt text for my approval with task_manage." Product changes go live on Squarespace only after you approve them.
