Search Console is the first item in our Squarespace SEO checklist, because every other fix is measured there.
Before You Connect
Squarespace lists these conditions (Squarespace: verifying with Search Console, checked October 2026):
- The site is published and not on a trial. Trial sites are hidden from search engines, so verification does not work.
- There is no site-wide password, and no page password on the homepage.
- If you use a domain bought elsewhere, it is properly connected. Squarespace recommends waiting 48 hours after connecting a domain before you verify.
- You have a Google account.
Also check Settings > Crawlers: "Block search engine crawlers" must be unchecked.
Connect in 4 Steps
- Open the Analytics panel and click Search keywords.
- Click Connect in the pop-up.
- Sign in to the Google account you want to use and review the permissions.
- Click Allow.
Squarespace verifies your primary domain for you. Data shows up in the Search keywords panel after about 72 hours.
Submit Your Sitemap
Squarespace builds sitemap.xml for every site and keeps it updated. You only submit it once:
- In Search Console, pick your site from the property menu at the top left.
- Open Sitemaps.
- Under "Add a new sitemap", enter
sitemap.xmland click Submit.
The status should say Success within a day or two. "Couldn't fetch" right after submitting often clears on its own. If it lasts, check that the site is published and not password protected.
Warnings You Can Ignore
Squarespace's help center lists these as normal (Squarespace: Google SEO emails and console errors):
| What Search Console shows | Why it happens on Squarespace |
|---|---|
| Blocked by robots.txt for /config, /api, /search and tag, author, month, view or format filter URLs | Squarespace asks Google not to crawl internal and duplicate URLs |
| Crawled or excluded by noindex: /cart and /checkout | Squarespace adds noindex to these on every site, and it cannot be removed |
| Alternate page with proper canonical tag: /home | Your homepage has two URLs. Squarespace asks Google to index only the root |
| Page with redirect: http or www versions | The normal redirect to your secure, primary domain |
| Discovered, currently not indexed (new pages) | Google found the page but has not crawled it yet |
Warnings to Fix
| What Search Console shows | What to do |
|---|---|
| Not found (404) for a URL that had clicks or links | Add a 301 in URL mappings to the closest live page (how) |
| Soft 404 on a product | Remove "no longer available" style text, or redirect if the product is gone for good |
| Crawled, currently not indexed on an important page | Improve the page: more unique content, more internal links (guide) |
| Excluded by noindex on a page you want in Google | Turn off "Hide page from search results" in the page's SEO tab |
| Discovered, not indexed for weeks on key pages | Link to them from your homepage or navigation |
The First 3 Reports to Read
- Performance > Search results. Sort pages by impressions. Pages with many impressions and few clicks need better SEO titles and descriptions.
- Indexing > Pages. Check that the number of indexed pages roughly matches the pages you want in Google. Click each reason in "Why pages aren't indexed" and compare it with the two tables above.
- Sitemaps. Confirm sitemap.xml shows Success and a sensible number of discovered pages.

How to Use This with an AI Assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use gsc_insights sitemaps and gsc_indexing batch_inspect on my 20 most important Squarespace URLs. Tell me which are not indexed, why, and whether the reason is a normal Squarespace warning or something to fix." This needs a free SEOmatic sign-in, which also connects your Search Console.
Let the Agents Do This on Your Squarespace Store
SEOmatic's AI agents connect to Squarespace and read your own Google Search Console data. Squarespace only opens its store products to outside tools, so on Squarespace the agents work on your products:
- Rewrite product SEO titles and descriptions for the searches each product gets
- Blog posts and regular pages are not reachable through Squarespace's API, so the agents list those fixes for you instead
- Every product change is checked against how the rest of your site did
Each change can wait for your approval, one click undoes it, and the agents check it against how the rest of your site did. What they can change depends on your platform, and you see the full list before anything runs.
