Why order matters
Most optimization checklists list 50 items with equal weight. On a real site with limited hours, order is the whole game. A page that is not indexed gets nothing from a better title. A page at position 40 gets almost nothing from a better meta description. A page at position 6 with a weak title can gain clicks this month.
So this list starts from your own Search Console data, not from a generic audit.
The 12-step SEO optimization checklist
Step 1. Confirm your money pages are indexed. In Search Console, run URL Inspection on your 5 to 10 money pages. Each should say "URL is on Google". If not, fix the reason first (indexing problems fix guide).
Step 2. Remove blockers. Check robots.txt, stray noindex tags, canonicals pointing elsewhere and redirect chains on those pages. One template bug can hide a whole section.
Step 3. Find pages with high impressions and low CTR. Performance > Pages, last 3 months, sort by impressions. Compare CTR against pages at a similar position. Before rewriting, search the query yourself: if an AI Overview, ads or a map pack sit above you, a title change will not fix it.
Step 4. Rewrite those titles and descriptions. Specific beats clever. Add the detail searchers want: price, location, time, number. Patterns: title and meta swipe file.
Step 5. Work the near-page-one queries. Queries at average position 8 to 20 with real impressions. Open the ranking page and add what the top 3 have that you lack: a section, a table, an example, a clear answer near the top.
Step 6. Point internal links at those pages. Link from your strongest related pages with descriptive anchor text. This is one of the few ranking levers fully in your control (internal linking playbook).
Step 7. Fix cannibalization. Filter one important query in Search Console, open the Pages tab. If two of your pages split impressions for the same need, merge them with a 301. If the needs differ, make each page clearly different.
Step 8. Refresh pages that lost clicks. Compare the last 3 months with the previous 3 months by page. Update facts, add missing sections, keep the same URL. If the whole site dropped on one date, check the Google Search Status Dashboard for a core update first.
Step 9. Fix speed on templates, not single pages. Search Console > Core Web Vitals groups URLs by template. Targets: LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1 (Google).
Step 10. Clean up thin and duplicate pages. Improve, merge or noindex near-empty tag pages, old event pages and swapped-city copies.
Step 11. Make facts quotable for AI answers. Prices, hours, areas, specs as plain full sentences near the top. Check that robots.txt does not block the AI search crawlers you want answers from.
Step 12. Measure, then repeat. Log each change with its date. Judge it 28 days after Google recrawls the page. Repeat steps 3 to 8 every month.
Worked example (fictional)
northwind-outdoors.com sells camping gear. In Search Console:
| Page | Impressions (3 mo) | Position | CTR | Step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /tents/2-person | 41,000 | 4.8 | 1.1% | Step 3-4: title says only "2 Person Tents". Rewrite with weight and price range |
| /guides/how-to-pitch-a-tent | 18,500 | 11.3 | 0.6% | Step 5-6: add a step list with photos, link to it from 3 tent product pages |
| /sleeping-bags and /sleeping-bags-sale | split | 9 and 14 | low | Step 7: same need, merge the sale page into the main one with a 301 |
Three pages, about four hours of work, all chosen from data rather than guesswork. The numbers are illustrative, not a customer result.
Monthly optimization routine (60 minutes)
- 15 min: Search Console Pages report for new indexing errors.
- 15 min: high-impression, low-CTR pages; pick two to rewrite.
- 20 min: three queries at position 8 to 20; plan one improvement each.
- 10 min: log what changed and when.
The full maintenance list is in the monthly SEO checklist.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use SEOmatic gsc_insights (action ctr_outliers) and gsc_performance (action compare_periods) on my site, pick the 5 fixes with the most missed clicks, and stage them with task_manage (action create) for my approval." SEOmatic drafts the change in your CMS; nothing goes live until you approve, and every change can be undone.
