What SEO means, in one paragraph
SEO (search engine optimization) is making your website easy for Google to find, understand and show to people who search for what you offer. Google sends a program (a crawler) to read your pages, stores them in its index, and picks which pages to show for each search. You cannot pay Google for these free results. You can make your pages clearer and more useful than the others.
The 10 checks
| # | Check | Why it matters | Where to click | Done when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Set up Google Search Console | It is Google's free report on your site: what is indexed and what people search to find you | search.google.com/search-console, add your domain | You see your site in Search Console |
| 2 | Make sure Google can see your site | One wrong setting can hide the whole site | Search site:yourdomain.com on Google | Your pages show up |
| 3 | Submit your sitemap | It lists your pages for Google | Search Console > Sitemaps | Status says Success |
| 4 | Write a clear title for each main page | The title is the blue link people click | Your website builder's SEO or page settings | Each page has its own title, like "Dog Grooming in Leeds, from 35 GBP" |
| 5 | Write a short description for each main page | It can show under the title in results | Same place as the title | One or two sentences with a real detail |
| 6 | Put the answer at the top | Searchers and Google both want it fast | Edit the page | The first two sentences answer the question the page is about |
| 7 | Describe your images | Google reads alt text to understand images | Image settings, "alt text" | Each important image has a short description |
| 8 | Link your pages to each other | Links help Google find pages and see what matters | Edit text on related pages | Each main page gets links from 2 or more other pages |
| 9 | Claim your Google Business Profile (local businesses) | It powers your listing on Google Maps | business.google.com | Profile verified, hours and photos added |
| 10 | Check results once a month | You learn what works | Search Console > Performance | You wrote down clicks and impressions with the date |
For check 2: if site:yourdomain.com shows nothing, look for a setting like "Hide from search engines" or "Discourage search engines" in your website builder, and switch it off. Your site needs to be live for a few days or weeks before Google shows it. Google says crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks (Google Search Central).
For checks 4 and 5: Google sets no exact length. It cuts long titles to fit the screen and sometimes writes its own (Google, title links). Put the important words first.
Words you will see
- Crawl: Google's program visiting and reading a page.
- Index: Google's stored copy of the web. A page that is "indexed" can show in results.
- Title tag: the page title Google usually shows as the blue link.
- Meta description: a short summary you write; Google may show it under the title.
- Impressions: how many times your page was shown in results.
- Clicks and CTR: how many people clicked, and the share of impressions that became clicks.
- Backlink: a link from another website to yours.
- Noindex: a tag that tells Google not to show a page.
- Sitemap: a file that lists your pages for search engines.
Three beginner mistakes to skip
- Buying links. Packages of "1,000 backlinks" break Google's spam policies and can get your site demoted (Google spam policies). Real links come from partners, suppliers, local press and directories your buyers use.
- Chasing big, broad keywords. "Shoes" is out of reach. "Wide fit walking shoes for women" is not. Start with specific searches.
- Publishing many thin pages. Ten useful pages beat a hundred near-empty ones. Copying a page and swapping the city name is a common way to get none of them ranked.
Two myths you can ignore: you do not need a "keyword density" (Google has no target), and you do not need special files or markup for Google's AI Overviews. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear there (Google, AI features and your website, updated December 2025).
How to know it is working
After a month, open Search Console > Performance. Look at three numbers for the last 28 days: impressions, clicks and the queries list. Rising impressions mean Google is showing you more. Then look for queries where you show on page 2 (average position 11 to 20). Those pages are close; improving them is your next job.
Write every change in a simple log with the date. SEO changes take weeks to show, and without a log you will not know what worked.
