First, check the tag exists
Before you blame Google, make sure the description is really there.
- Open the page in a browser and view the source (Ctrl+U on Windows, Cmd+Option+U on a Mac).
- Search for
name="description". - Read what is in
content="...". Is it the text you wrote?
Or paste the URL into our free meta tag checker.
| What you find | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No description tag at all | The field is empty and your CMS has no default, or the theme does not output it | Fill the field; on WordPress, see Yoast meta description |
| Two description tags | Two SEO plugins, or a theme plus a plugin | Keep one source |
| An old description | A page cache or CDN serves the old version | Clear the cache, then check again |
| Your text, correct | The tag is fine. Google chose other text | Read on |
How Google chooses a snippet
Google's own words: it creates snippets "primarily from the page content itself," and "sometimes uses the meta description HTML element if it might give users a more accurate description of the page than content taken directly from the page" (Google, snippets, updated April 20, 2026).
Two things follow:
- It is per search, not per page. For a search that matches your description well, Google may show it. For a different search, it may pull a sentence from the page that answers that search better.
- It is a judgment, not a setting. No tag forces Google to use your description.
One page, different snippets
Take a fictional page, brightsmile-dental.com/teeth-whitening, with this description: "In-office teeth whitening in Tacoma, done in one 90-minute visit. Prices from $399. Book online in under 2 minutes."
| Search | Snippet Google might show | Why |
|---|---|---|
| teeth whitening tacoma | Your meta description | It matches the place and the service |
| does teeth whitening hurt | A sentence from the page's FAQ about sensitivity | The page answers that better than the description |
| teeth whitening cost | Your description, or the price table text | Both name the price |
That is not a failure. Google is matching the snippet to the search. The fix is to make sure the page text that Google might pull is clear too.
5 reasons your description loses
- It is generic. "Welcome to our website. We offer quality services." describes any page. Google prefers page text that says something.
- It is duplicated. The same description on many pages. Google recommends a unique description for each page.
- It is a keyword list. Google says descriptions "comprised of long strings of keywords don't give users a clear idea of the page's content, and are less likely to be displayed as a snippet."
- It does not match the page. A description promising "free shipping" on a page that never mentions it.
- It does not match the search. For long or question searches, a sentence from the body is often closer. You cannot win every query, so write the description for the main one.
What helps Google pick your description
- Name the specific thing on the page: the product, the service, the city, the number.
- Add details Google mentions as useful, like author, date, price or product facts.
- Keep it to one or two plain sentences. Google has no length limit, but snippets are cut to fit the device, so put the key point first. See meta description length.
- Write unique descriptions for your most visited pages first. For large sites, Google is fine with descriptions built from page data, as long as each one is specific and readable.
After a change, Google needs to recrawl the page. Request indexing in URL Inspection for one page, then search again after a few days.
nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet
Three controls change what Google may show. Check that none is set by mistake.
| Control | Where it goes | What it does |
|---|---|---|
nosnippet | Robots meta tag | No text snippet for the page |
max-snippet:[number] | Robots meta tag | Caps the snippet at that many characters |
data-nosnippet | An HTML attribute on a section | Keeps that section out of snippets |
A max-snippet:0 or a stray nosnippet from an old plugin setting will hide your description no matter how good it is. These controls also apply to how your content can be used in Google's AI features, so use them on purpose.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Run site_audit on mysite.com and list pages with missing or duplicate meta descriptions. Then use site_pages (action: crawl) on my top pages and draft a specific description for each, staged for my approval." Signing in is free; staging fixes needs the trial.
