| XML sitemap | Yes | Yes | Both replace the WordPress core sitemap |
| Redirect manager | Yes | Premium only | Biggest practical difference |

The settings that matter, side by side
Most of your SEO result comes from 6 settings, not from scores in the editor. Here is where they live:
| Setting | Rank Math | Yoast SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Attachment pages redirect | General Settings > Links > Redirect Attachments | Settings > Advanced > Media pages |
| Tag archives in search | Titles & Meta > Tags | Settings > Categories & tags > Tags |
| Author and date archives | Titles & Meta > Authors, and Misc Pages | Settings > Advanced > Author archives, Date archives |
| Empty archives | Titles & Meta > Global Meta > Noindex Empty Category and Tag Archives | No switch: delete unused terms |
| robots.txt | General Settings > Edit robots.txt (virtual file) | Tools > File editor (creates a physical file) |
| Brand schema | Titles & Meta > Local SEO | Settings > Site representation |
Where each plugin is the better choice
Pick Rank Math if:
- You want redirects and a 404 log without paying.
- You run several sites and want one free plugin with most features.
- You like seeing Search Console numbers inside WordPress.
Pick Yoast if:
- Your writers want strong readability feedback while they draft.
- You prefer fewer settings and a more guided setup.
- You already pay for Premium and use its redirect manager and link suggestions.
Either is fine if you only need titles, descriptions, a sitemap and schema. Google does not rank a site higher for using one or the other.
How they work with other tools
If you use outside tools to edit SEO fields (a headless setup, an automation, or an SEO agent), know this:
- Yoast exposes its SEO output in the WordPress REST API for reading (
yoast_head_json), but that output is read-only. Tools cannot save a Yoast title through it without extra code or a helper plugin. - Rank Math's fields are not registered in the REST API by default either.
So most outside tools need a small helper plugin to write titles, canonicals or noindex. SEOmatic uses its own SEO Writer plugin for this, and writes into whichever SEO plugin you run.
How to switch from Yoast to Rank Math (or back) safely
- Back up the site (database included).
- Install the new plugin but do not deactivate the old one yet. Rank Math's setup wizard offers to import Yoast settings, titles, descriptions and redirects.
- Check 10 pages: your homepage, top 5 pages by clicks, a category, a product and a post. Compare title, description, canonical and robots in the page source with the old version.
- Recreate redirects if your old redirects lived in Yoast Premium and did not import.
- Deactivate and delete the old plugin. Two active SEO plugins print duplicate tags.
- Re-check the sitemap URL in Search Console and in robots.txt.
- Watch Search Console for two weeks: Indexing > Pages and Performance.
How to use this with an AI assistant
Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Run site_audit on mysite.com and tell me if any page has two title tags, two canonicals or a missing meta description." That is the fastest way to catch a half-finished plugin switch.
