Rollout length of every core update since 2024
These come from the Google Search Status Dashboard, which lists the start time and duration of each ranking update. "Done" is the start date plus the listed duration.
| Core update | Started | Rollout length | Done (about) |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 2024 | Mar 5, 2024 | 45 days | Apr 19, 2024 |
| August 2024 | Aug 15, 2024 | 19 days, 4 hours | Sep 3, 2024 |
| November 2024 | Nov 11, 2024 | 23 days, 13 hours | Dec 5, 2024 |
| December 2024 | Dec 12, 2024 | 6 days, 4 hours | Dec 18, 2024 |
| March 2025 | Mar 13, 2025 | 13 days, 21 hours | Mar 27, 2025 |
| June 2025 | Jun 30, 2025 | 16 days, 18 hours | Jul 17, 2025 |
| December 2025 | Dec 11, 2025 | 18 days, 2 hours | Dec 29, 2025 |
| March 2026 | Mar 27, 2026 | 12 days, 4 hours | Apr 8, 2026 |
| May 2026 | May 21, 2026 | 11 days, 21 hours | Jun 2, 2026 |
A few patterns:
- The median is about 17 days. Half of the nine rollouts took longer, half shorter.
- March 2024 was the outlier. At 45 days it was the longest. It was also a bigger change than usual: it folded the helpful content system into core ranking (Google ranking systems guide).
- The 2026 rollouts were short. Both finished in about 12 days.
Google does not promise a length in advance. Each update gets its own entry on the dashboard, and the entry is marked complete when the rollout ends.
Why rankings swing during the rollout
A core update does not flip on for every page at once. It spreads through Google's systems over days or weeks. While it does, the same query can show different results from one day to the next, and your pages can rise, fall and rise again.
That is why the middle of a rollout is the worst time to:
- Judge the impact. A drop on day 4 can be gone by day 12.
- Change your pages. If you rewrite during the rollout, you cannot tell whether the update or your edit caused what happens next.
- Report to a client. Numbers from a rollout week mix the old and new rankings.
Keep a short log instead: the date, what you saw, and nothing else. The checklist has a rollout log page for this.
When to check your data
Google's own advice is to wait "at least a full week after a core update completes" and then compare that week with a week before the rollout started (Google Search Central, core updates, updated December 2025).
In practice:
- Find the start and done dates on the Search Status Dashboard.
- Pick a before week: a full Monday to Sunday week that ends before the start date.
- Pick an after week: a full Monday to Sunday week that starts at least 7 days after the done date.
- Compare them in Search Console: Performance, Search results, date filter, Compare, Custom.
Worked example with the May 2026 core update (started May 21, done about June 2):
| Week | Dates | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Before | May 11 to 17, 2026 | The last full week before May 21 |
| After | June 15 to 21, 2026 | The first full Monday to Sunday week starting 7 or more days after June 2 |
So the earliest clean read was June 22, about a month after the start. For a 45-day rollout like March 2024, the wait was over two months.
How total time adds up
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Rollout (2024 to 2026 range) | 6 to 45 days |
| Wait after it is marked complete | 7 days minimum |
| Buffer for preliminary Search Console data | 1 to 2 days |
| Earliest clean comparison | about 3 to 8 weeks after the start date |
Search Console's newest data can be preliminary, so leave the last couple of days out of any comparison.
Rollout time is not recovery time
People often mix up two questions:
- How long does the update take? That is the rollout above: days to weeks, set by Google.
- How long until my traffic comes back? That depends on what you change and on when Google re-assesses your site. Google says some changes take effect in days, but a site-wide re-assessment "could take several months" (Google).
If an update hit you, the rollout ending is the start of your work, not the end of the problem. See how long recovery takes.
How to know a rollout has finished
Open the Search Status Dashboard and find the update. While it rolls out, the entry shows as ongoing. When it ends, Google adds a final note and the dashboard shows the total duration. You can also follow the dashboard's RSS feed. Our guide to reading the Search Status Dashboard shows where each part sits.

Connect SEOmatic at https://seomatic.ai/mcp and ask: "Use gsc_performance with action trend on mysite.com for the last 90 days and mark the days when the May 2026 core update was rolling out (May 21 to about June 2, 2026). Did clicks or impressions change after it finished?" The trend read needs a free sign-in with connect_seomatic.
