"plumber near me" gets 823,000 US searches a month, and the plumbers Google shows first get the calls. Most of those searches end in "near me" and many are urgent, so getting there starts with a complete Google Business Profile with true hours, then a page for each service and each city you really serve, steady reviews, and an emergency page that says when you answer.
This guide covers the parts that bring calls, in the order worth doing them. For the full list of local checks, use the free local SEO checklist.
The Searches That Bring Plumbing Calls
Most homeowners search "plumber near me" with water on the floor. The rest search the job, the problem or the price. US searches a month, from Google Ads data:
| Search | US searches a month | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| plumber near me | 823,000 | The Google Maps results decide who gets the call |
| emergency plumber near me | 135,000 | Urgent: true hours and a phone that answers |
| drain cleaning near me | 110,000 | The most searched job: give it its own page |
| water heater repair near me | 90,500 | Water heaters need their own page |
| sewer line repair near me | 74,000 | A bigger job with its own questions |
| 24 hour plumber near me | 60,500 | Say plainly when you answer |
| tankless water heater installation | 40,500 | A page per product you install |
| water heater replacement cost | 40,500 | Publish price ranges or what changes the price |
| leak detection near me | 12,100 | People search the problem, not the trade |
| clogged drain | 9,900 | Some try to fix it first: a helpful page earns the call when they cannot |
| toilet repair near me | 2,900 | Small jobs still bring repeat customers |
Two patterns stand out. Searches end in "near me", so Google Maps and your local pages decide most of it. And many searches ask about cost, so the plumber who publishes price ranges answers the question others leave open.
Start With Your Google Business Profile
For "near me" searches, Google shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity" (Google Business Profile help). You cannot change distance. You can change the other two:
- Primary category: Plumber. Add secondary categories only for work you really do.
- Services: list each one (drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer lines, leak detection, repiping, fixtures) with a short description.
- Service area and hours: the cities and ZIP codes you cover. If you take calls around the clock, set your hours to match, and only then.
- Photos of real jobs: water heaters you installed, sewer camera shots, your trucks and team, every month.
- Reviews: ask after every job, reply to every review, and let customers mention the job and the town in their own words.
- Posts: freeze warnings, water heater tips, and the areas you cover this week.
Step by step: the Google Business Profile checklist, how to get more Google reviews and SEO for service area businesses.
Build a Page for Each Service
One page per job homeowners search: emergency plumbing, drain cleaning, water heater repair and replacement, tankless water heaters, sewer line repair, leak detection, toilets and fixtures, sump pumps, and repiping if you do it. Each page should answer what a homeowner asks before calling:
- What to do right now: where the shutoff valve is, what not to pour down a drain.
- What the job involves and how long it takes.
- A price range, or what makes the price go up or down, and whether you charge a trip fee.
- Repair or replace: how you help the homeowner decide.
- When you answer: evenings, weekends, nights.
- Your phone number near the top, and the areas you cover.
Give each page a title that matches the search, like "Drain Cleaning in Minneapolis: Same-Day Service | Bluestone Plumbing", and a first paragraph that answers the question in two sentences.
What SEOmatic's AI SEO agents do here: they find the service pages that show in Google but lose the click, then rewrite titles, headings and answers from your own Search Console data. You decide what goes live, and any change can be undone in one click.
City Pages Without Thin Copies
A page for each city you really serve helps you show for "plumber [city]" searches. Swapping the city name in one template does not: Google's spam policies call pages created to rank for similar searches that are less useful than the destination "doorway abuse" (Google). A city page earns its place with what is true only there:
| Thin city page | Useful city page |
|---|---|
| Same text with the city name swapped | Jobs you did in that city, with photos |
| No local detail | Older pipes in that area, hard water, basements that flood |
| Generic reviews | Reviews from customers in that city |
| No reason to exist | How fast you reach that city, and local permit notes |
Start with the 3 to 5 cities that bring most of your work, then add more as you collect jobs and photos there. More on doing it at scale: location pages that rank.
What SEOmatic's AI SEO agents do here: they check each town on the real results page, then draft pages for the places you serve from your best page. Pages too similar to each other are held back, not published.
Emergencies: Be the Plumber Who Answers
Urgent searches swing hard from month to month. Over the last 12 months, "emergency plumber near me" ranged from about 33,100 to 368,000 US searches a month, "24 hour plumber near me" from 6,600 to 165,000, "water heater repair near me" from 22,200 to 246,000, and "burst pipe repair" from 480 to 2,900. Whoever shows up and answers in those weeks gets the job. Be ready before:
- Keep an emergency plumbing page live all year: when you answer, what an after-hours visit costs or how it is priced, what to do while waiting.
- Set your profile hours to the hours you really answer, and pick up the phone.
- Keep frozen and burst pipe pages up to date before winter, with how to thaw safely and when to call.
- Put your phone number at the top of every page, tappable on a phone.
Licenses, Insurance and Reviews
Homeowners let you into their house, often in a hurry, so they look for signs you are real. Plumbing licenses are issued by states and cities, so show your license number where your state requires one, plus insurance, years in business and the warranty on your work. Ask every customer for a review, but never pay or give discounts for one: Google does not allow incentives for reviews (Google), and the FTC bans fake reviews and reviews bought for a set sentiment (FTC). Keep the same name, address and phone on every listing: see the local citation sites that matter and NAP consistency.
Add Plumber Schema
Schema.org has a type for this trade: Plumber, a kind of local business. Add it to your homepage or contact page so search engines read your name, area, phone and hours without guessing. Keep it matching what the page shows (Google, local business structured data). Example for a made-up company:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Plumber",
"name": "Bluestone Plumbing",
"url": "https://bluestoneplumbing.example",
"telephone": "+1-612-555-0139",
"areaServed": ["Minneapolis", "Bloomington", "Edina", "Eden Prairie"],
"openingHours": "Mo-Su 00:00-23:59",
"sameAs": ["https://www.facebook.com/bluestoneplumbing.example"]
}
</script>What SEOmatic's AI SEO agents do here: they add local business markup to your pages from the facts already on them, and you decide what goes live.
SEO or Buying Plumbing Leads?
| Item | SEO | Bought leads |
|---|---|---|
| Who else gets the lead | No one: the homeowner calls you | Often shared with other plumbers |
| Cost over time | Mostly time and upkeep; pages keep working | You pay for every lead, every month |
| How fast | Months for pages; weeks for profile fixes | As soon as you pay |
| What you own | Your site, profile and reviews | Nothing once you stop paying |
Many plumbers do both: bought leads or ads to fill this week's schedule, SEO so next year depends less on them.
What Plumbing SEO Costs
The basics cost time, not money: your Business Profile, reviews and service pages. Agencies charge monthly retainers that vary widely. Before you sign, ask four questions: which pages and listings they will change each month, how they will show you calls and clicks from Google, who owns the website and the Business Profile, and how long the contract runs.
A 30-Day Plumbing SEO Plan
- Week 1: complete your Google Business Profile with true hours and ask your last 20 customers for a review.
- Week 2: write or fix your emergency, drain cleaning and water heater pages, with price ranges.
- Week 3: build pages for your top 3 cities and fix your main directory listings.
- Week 4: publish your sewer line and leak detection pages, add Plumber schema, and connect Google Search Console to see which searches already find you.
Let the AI SEO Agents Do the Work
Built for plumbing companies whose site already brings calls from Google. SEOmatic's AI SEO agents read your own Search Console data and make these changes on your site, in your CMS:
- Check every service and city: are you in the Google Maps top 3, where do you rank below it, and who is there instead
- Draft a page for each city you serve from your best page, with your real work and reviews from each place
- Rewrite service page titles and text for the searches that bring calls, answer cost questions, and add local business schema
Each change can wait for your approval, one click undoes it, and the agents check it against how the rest of your site did. What they can change depends on your platform, and you see the full list before anything runs.
