People search for a lawyer by case type, like "car accident lawyer near me" (165,000 US searches a month), and the firms Google shows first get the consultations. Most of those searches name the case type and end in "near me", so getting there starts with a complete Google Business Profile, then a page for each practice area, city pages for where you really practice, and reviews, all within your state's attorney advertising rules.
This guide covers the parts that bring consultations, in the order worth doing them. For the full list of local checks, use the free local SEO checklist.
The Searches That Bring Clients
People rarely search "law firm". They search for a lawyer for their problem, usually with "near me". US searches a month, from Google Ads data:
| Search | US searches a month | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| car accident lawyer near me | 165,000 | People search the accident, not personal injury |
| family lawyer near me | 110,000 | Family law needs its own page |
| criminal defense lawyer near me | 90,500 | Urgent searches: the phone number must be easy to find |
| dui lawyer near me | 60,500 | A page per charge you defend |
| estate planning attorney near me | 49,500 | Wills and trusts, searched as planning |
| lawyer near me | 40,500 | Vague: your practice areas must be clear at a glance |
| divorce lawyer near me | 40,500 | Divorce gets searched apart from family law |
| immigration lawyer near me | 27,100 | Say which languages your team speaks |
| workers comp lawyer near me | 22,200 | Its own page, separate from personal injury |
| free consultation lawyer | 14,800 | Say plainly whether the first meeting is free |
| how much does a divorce lawyer cost | 3,600 | Explain how you charge: hourly, flat fee or contingency |
Two patterns stand out. Almost every search names the case type and ends in "near me", so Google Maps and your practice area pages decide most of it. And people ask about cost and free consultations, so the firm that explains how it charges answers the question others leave open. Demand also swings: over the last 12 months, "car accident lawyer near me" ranged from about 33,100 to 301,000 US searches a month and "criminal defense lawyer near me" from 33,100 to 165,000, so keep those pages live and current all year.
Start With Your Google Business Profile
For "near me" searches, Google shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity" (Google Business Profile help). You cannot change distance. You can change the other two:
- Primary category: the one that matches your main practice area, such as Personal injury attorney or Family law attorney. Add secondary categories only for work you really take.
- Services: list each practice area with a short, plain description of the cases you handle.
- Hours and office: exact hours, and whether you take calls after hours or meet clients by video.
- Photos: your office, your entrance and your team.
- Reviews: ask every client the same way once the matter is closed, and reply without revealing anything about the case (more below).
- Lawyers' own profiles: Google treats lawyers as individual practitioners, who may have their own profile next to the firm's, but not one profile per specialty (Google guidelines).
Step by step: the Google Business Profile checklist and how to get more Google reviews.
Build a Page for Each Service
One page per practice area people search: car accidents and personal injury, workers' compensation, divorce, child custody, criminal defense, DUI, estate planning, immigration, and any other area you take. Each page should answer what a person asks before calling:
- What happens next in this kind of case, step by step, in your state.
- How you charge: hourly, flat fee or contingency, and whether the first consultation is free.
- What to bring to the first meeting, and deadlines to know about.
- Who will handle the case, with their bar admissions.
- Your phone number near the top, the cities you cover and the languages you speak.
Legal topics get extra scrutiny: Google says its systems give extra weight to content with strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust on topics that can affect people's financial stability or well-being (Google). Name the lawyer who wrote or reviewed each page. Give each page a title that matches the search, like "Car Accident Lawyer in Columbus: Free Consultation | Harlow & Pierce Law".
What SEOmatic's AI SEO agents do here: they find the service pages that show in Google but lose the click, then rewrite titles, headings and answers from your own Search Console data. You decide what goes live, and any change can be undone in one click.
City Pages Without Thin Copies
A page for each city where you really take cases helps you show for "dui lawyer [city]" searches. Swapping the city name in one template does not: Google's spam policies call pages created to rank for similar searches that are less useful than the destination "doorway abuse" (Google). A city page earns its place with what is true only there:
| Thin city page | Useful city page |
|---|---|
| Same text with the city name swapped | The courthouse and county where those cases are heard |
| No local detail | Local procedure, and which office serves that city |
| Generic reviews | Reviews from clients in that area |
| Pages for places you cannot practice | Only cities in states where you are licensed |
Start with the 3 to 5 cities that bring most of your cases. More on doing it at scale: location pages that rank.
What SEOmatic's AI SEO agents do here: they check each town on the real results page, then draft pages for the places you serve from your best page. Pages too similar to each other are held back, not published.
Reviews and Client Confidentiality
Reviews matter to people choosing a lawyer, but your duty of confidentiality covers what you say in a reply. ABA Model Rule 1.6 bars revealing information relating to a client's representation without consent (ABA). ABA Formal Opinion 496 says a negative online review alone does not justify disclosing client information, and suggests not replying, asking the site to remove the post, or replying that professional considerations prevent a response (ABA). Safe habits:
- Never mention the case, the outcome or anything you learned from the client in a reply.
- For a negative review, a short line inviting the person to contact you, or saying professional duties prevent you from responding, is enough.
- Ask every client for a review the same way. Google does not allow merchants to selectively ask happy customers only or to offer anything in exchange for a review (Google).
- Never write reviews for your own firm or buy them: the FTC rule on fake reviews has applied since October 2024 (FTC).
- Check your state's rules on client testimonials before you quote any on your site.
Attorney Advertising Rules
Your website, Business Profile and every page you publish are communications about your services. The ABA Model Rules 7.1 to 7.3 are the baseline most states start from (ABA Model Rules), and each state's version differs, so check your own bar's rules first. The baseline:
- No false or misleading statements (Rule 7.1). That includes true statements that create unjustified expectations, such as past results presented as if any client could get the same (ABA).
- "Certified specialist" only if certified by an organization approved by your state or accredited by the ABA, named in the communication (Rule 7.2(c)) (ABA).
- Name and contact information of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for the content (Rule 7.2(d)).
- No live solicitation (Rule 7.3): do not contact a specific person who needs legal help in person or by live call to win paid work, with narrow exceptions such as other lawyers and people you already know.
Use the same firm name, address and phone on every listing (Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, your state bar directory and the rest): see the local citation sites that matter and NAP consistency.
Add LegalService Schema
Schema.org has an Attorney type, but marks it deprecated: LegalService is "more inclusive and less ambiguous" (schema.org). Use LegalService, a kind of local business, on your homepage or contact page so search engines read your name, address, phone and hours without guessing. Keep it matching what the page shows (Google, local business structured data). Example for a made-up firm:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LegalService",
"name": "Harlow & Pierce Law",
"url": "https://harlowpierce.example",
"telephone": "+1-614-555-0129",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "250 E Broad St, Suite 900",
"addressLocality": "Columbus",
"addressRegion": "OH",
"postalCode": "43215",
"addressCountry": "US"
},
"areaServed": ["Columbus", "Dublin", "Westerville", "Grove City"],
"openingHours": "Mo-Fr 08:30-17:30",
"sameAs": ["https://www.facebook.com/harlowpierce.example"]
}

SEO or Buying Legal Leads?
| Item | SEO | Bought leads and directories |
|---|---|---|
| Who else gets the client | No one: the client calls you | Often shared with other firms |
| Cost over time | Mostly time and upkeep; pages keep working | You pay for every lead or listing, every month |
| How fast | Months for pages; weeks for profile fixes | As soon as you pay |
| What you own | Your site, profile and reviews | Nothing once you stop paying |
Check any lead service against your state's rules first. ABA Model Rule 7.2(b) bars paying anyone for recommending you, with exceptions such as the reasonable cost of advertising and the usual charges of a not-for-profit or qualified lawyer referral service (ABA). Many firms do both: ads for this month's cases, SEO so next year depends less on them.
What Law Firm SEO Costs
The basics cost time, not money: your Business Profile, reviews and practice area pages. Agencies charge monthly retainers that vary widely. Before you sign, ask four questions: which pages and listings they will change each month, how they will show you calls and consultations from Google, who owns the website and the Business Profile, and how long the contract runs. You stay responsible for what is published under your name, so review every page before it goes live.
A 30-Day Law Firm SEO Plan
- Week 1: complete your Google Business Profile, ask clients with closed matters for a review, and write a safe reply template.
- Week 2: write or fix the pages for your two or three main practice areas, with how you charge and what happens next.
- Week 3: build pages for your top 3 cities and fix your main directory listings.
- Week 4: check every page against your state's advertising rules, add LegalService schema, and connect Google Search Console to see which searches already find you.
Let the AI SEO Agents Do the Work
Built for law firms whose site already brings clients from Google. SEOmatic's AI SEO agents read your own Search Console data and make these changes on your site, in your CMS:
- Check every practice area and city: are you in the Google Maps top 3, where do you rank below it, and who is there instead
- Draft a page for each city where you take cases, from your best page, with your real work and reviews from each place
- Rewrite practice area titles and text for the searches that bring clients, and add LegalService schema
Each change can wait for your approval, one click undoes it, and the agents check it against how the rest of your site did. What they can change depends on your platform, and you see the full list before anything runs.
