An AI SEO agent is software that does SEO work on your site: it diagnoses, decides, and ships changes, instead of handing you another report. The category is young and loud, and the loudest complaint in verified community threads is the same everywhere: unsupervised execution breaks sites, and rented changes vanish when you stop paying. So we ranked the field on two questions that matter more than feature counts: what does each agent actually execute, and how much control do you keep while it runs? Every tool below passed a category-integrity check against its own positioning and pricing page, and every quote is a real, sourced review.
Five agents that really execute, compared on the capabilities that decide whether you can trust one on a live site: diagnosis, approval and rollback, proof, AI-search tracking, and where the changes actually live. SEOmatic, Search Atlas, Alli AI, Ryze AI and Frase all passed the category test; content writers and rank trackers that market themselves as agents did not.
Agent Diagnosis & Ranked Action Plan
The agent reads your site and your Search Console data, then ranks every fix by what it is worth before executing anything.
Approval Workflow & One-Click Rollback
Nothing ships until you approve it, and any single change can be undone without reversing everything else.
Real CMS Edits You Keep
Changes are written into your CMS content rather than served from a JavaScript layer, so the work survives cancellation.
Holdout Testing & Proof Reports
Worked pages are measured against matched pages left untouched on purpose, so the report shows earned lift, losses included.
AI Citation Tracking
See where you get cited in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, alongside classic rankings.
Weekly Replanning
Results feed back into next week's plan, so the agent gets sharper on your site the longer it runs.

SEOmatic is a supervised SEO agent: it connects to your Google Search Console, diagnoses the whole site, and proposes a ranked plan of what moves rankings and revenue. Its agents then execute 40 types of SEO tasks, from striking-distance pushes and internal links to schema, content refreshes and programmatic pages, directly in your CMS across 14 platforms including WordPress, Webflow, Shopify and HubSpot.
Control is the design, not a setting. Approval is the default on every change, booking and checkout pages are locked in code, a QA reviewer gates every piece of content, and any edit rolls back in one click. When a site has earned trust, you can grant assisted or full autonomy within a daily cap. Then comes the part nobody else on this list does: every task is measured against a holdout of untouched pages, losses included, and the plan is rewritten every Monday against real results.
The honest caveat: SEOmatic has no third-party review footprint yet, so the quote below is a customer's words rather than a review-platform excerpt. Plans run $99, $249 and $699 a month with a 14-day trial and a $1 card check that gets refunded.

Search Atlas is the biggest name in this category, and OTTO, its agent, monopolizes the community conversation about executing SEO agents. The suite around it is genuinely broad: audits, keyword research, rank tracking, content tools, local SEO and ads automation in one subscription from $79 a month, with AI-visibility tracking on higher tiers. OTTO deploys technical fixes, metadata, schema and content, with an approval mode available.
The community's verdict is genuinely split, and both halves are instructive. Verified positive threads read like this r/seogrowth comment: “Been really liking OTTO... got me feeling like i have an edge.” The verified negative threads center on unsupervised execution: one r/seogrowth user reported OTTO's link feature went rogue and created hundreds of links, about 40% outside the program; r/Agentic_SEO commenters describe scripts that insert text over your own, changes that disappear the moment you stop paying, and broken sitemaps. Most changes deploy through a JavaScript pixel rather than your CMS content.
If you want maximum surface area per dollar and are comfortable supervising an autopilot-first tool closely, OTTO is the suite to beat. Trial and cancellation friction is a recurring review theme, so read the billing terms before connecting a card.
“Search Atlas has been amazing for us…our results just keep getting better and better!”

What You'd Get From Working With Search Atlas
The broadest feature surface in the category: SEO, AEO, local, ads and PR in one subscription from $79/mo
OTTO deploys technical fixes, schema, metadata and content, with an approval mode you can switch on
AI-visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode on the $199/mo Growth tier and up

Alli AI is built for one job at impressive scale: bulk on-page and technical changes across large sites and portfolios. Its own pitch is “One rule. 9,412 pages. 47 seconds,” and that is a fair description of the workflow: crawl, review recommendations, approve site-wide rules, and the changes deploy everywhere at once. Plans start at $249 a month for five sites with per-site, per-keyword and per-page overage fees.
The structural catch is where those changes live. Alli applies optimizations through a JavaScript snippet at render time rather than writing them into your CMS, which its own reviewers flag as the trade-off: one verified Trustpilot review calls it “Just a JavaScript layer that vanished the moment you stop paying.” There is no per-change rollback; ending the subscription reverses everything at once. There is also no diagnosis from your Search Console data, no holdout measurement, and no AI-citation tracking.
For a hands-on operator who wants one rule pushed across ten thousand pages this afternoon, nothing here is faster. Just go in understanding that you are renting the optimizations, not keeping them.
“The ease of this is worth 2x more than what they charge.”

What You'd Get From Working With Alli AI
Unmatched bulk-rule deployment: one approved rule can update thousands of pages in under a minute
Works across WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and code-level integrations via one snippet
A/B testing and a visual editor for on-page experiments at portfolio scale

Ryze AI is the closest thing to a second supervised agent on this list: it runs a real approval queue, deploys changes through a plugin or pull request into your actual site, and can auto-revert fixes that correlate with ranking drops. It started as an ads autopilot, and that heritage shows: the SEO Autopilot lane is $129 a month, sold alongside ad-management lanes from $89 to $1,499, which makes it the natural pick if one tool should watch both your organic and paid funnels.
The caution flags are recency flags. Verified 2026 Trustpilot reviews describe the agent inventing audit findings that did not exist, reporting a campaign as paused when it was not, and generating thin articles, alongside strong praise for the ads side. There is no holdout-based measurement, no AI-citation tracking, and the company answers none of its negative reviews. The product is genuinely promising and genuinely young.
If your SEO agent will also steer ad spend, verify its claims against your own Search Console and ad accounts for the first month before widening its autonomy.
“One of the best products to hit the advertising industry in a long time…very responsive.”

What You'd Get From Working With Ryze AI
Real execution controls: an approval queue, plugin or pull-request deployment, and automatic reverts on ranking drops
One platform for SEO and paid ads, with per-lane published pricing from $89 to $1,499/mo
Multi-client dashboards and white-label reporting for teams running several accounts

Frase repositioned in 2026 from a content optimizer into a content-led agent: it audits your content, drafts, publishes to your CMS, monitors decay, and applies fixes within autonomy levels you set per content type. At $39 a month on annual billing it is by far the cheapest real agent in the field, and its breadth for the money is the reason reviewers keep it around.
Scope is the boundary to understand. Frase's execution is content execution: it will not repair schema, fix technical issues, or run site-wide on-page campaigns, and there is no holdout measurement or AI-citation tracking. Its review base also carries a specific bruise: the 2026 platform rebuild downgraded AppSumo lifetime-deal customers, and verified one-star reviews call it a bait and switch. New subscribers are unaffected, but it colors the Trustpilot average.
For a solo founder or small team whose whole SEO problem is content that needs writing, refreshing and publishing on a budget, Frase is the honest pick at a quarter of the price of everything above it.
“They are now superior to competitors and have more of a breadth of features.”

What You'd Get From Working With Frase
The cheapest real agent in the category at $39/mo on annual billing
Audits, drafts, publishes and refreshes content with per-content-type autonomy levels
A research-grade content editor that a decade of optimizer users already know
The AI SEO agent category has a real product at its center and a lot of noise at its edges: most tools marketed as agents are writers or trackers that never touch your site, and the ones that do execute differ mostly in how much control you keep. The verified community record points one direction: agents that execute without supervision break sites, and agents that serve changes from a script take the work with them when you leave. Pick the agent whose changes you approve, whose edits you keep, and whose results you can prove, and the category delivers exactly what it promises.
