We asked real buying questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and recorded 7,461 citations. When two engines answered the same question, 46% of the time they shared zero cited sources.

TL;DR
Every month we ask real buying questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews on a schedule and record exactly what they cite - 7,461 citations across 299 scans this month. The headline finding: the engines barely read the same web. Full data in the AI Visibility Report.
Of the buying questions answered by two or more engines this month, 356 could be compared engine-to-engine. In 46% of those, the engines shared not a single cited source - not partial overlap, zero (95% CI 40-51%). Each engine retrieves from its own slice of the web, which means checking your brand on ChatGPT tells you nothing about Perplexity.
The volumes differ as much as the sources: Perplexity attached 4,018 citations this month, ChatGPT 2,328, Claude 1,544, and Google AI Overviews just 248. Reddit tops the overall leaderboard while only two of the four engines cite it at all.
The practical consequence: track presence per engine, not "AI visibility" as one number.
The median AI answer to a buying question names 5 brands (mean 6.4, n=1,382). A Google first page has ten slots plus ads; an AI answer has five seats, no ads, and no page two - which is why the metric that matters is whether you are IN the answer, not where you rank within it.
Industry studies claim up to 62% of AI citations never name the cited brand. We measured it on live answers: of 106 answers that cited a brand's own site, zero failed to name the brand (95% CI 0-3%). When an engine trusts your page enough to cite it, it credits you.
The fix is upstream: the battle is getting cited at all - and 81% of citations point at pages brands do not control, so what others publish about you decides four of every five citations.
