Programmatic SEO Glossary

Every important SEO term explained.

Parameterized URLs

Parameterized URLs use query strings to dynamically alter the content of a page. Common examples include sorting (?sort=price), filtering (?filter=red), or tracking user behavior (?utm_source=google). While useful for dynamic functionality, parameterized URLs can cause significant SEO challenges, such as duplicate content or bloated crawl budgets.

To manage parameterized URLs effectively, businesses often use canonical tags, robots.txt rules, or Google Search Console to instruct search engines on which parameters to ignore. Rewriting parameterized URLs into clean, static formats can also improve their readability and SEO performance. For example, example.com/products?category=shoes might be rewritten to example.com/products/shoes.

Proper handling of parameterized URLs ensures that search engines focus on high-value pages while avoiding redundancy, supporting crawl efficiency, and preserving link equity.
